I'm an Asian person too and English is my second language ig, and I remember that when I was very young I went to a restaurant and asked the waiter to give me a pipe and my parents started laughing, then they taught me that it is called a straw.

That ' Pipe' one happened to me years ago . I asked the sale person " Do you have Pipe " after buying a water bottle . She was so confused and pointed to the store next door where they sell Pipes that use in houses . I was also confused because I really don't know it's called 'Straw ' and not 'Pipe'. I literally had to use body language to explain . She finally understood and gave straw to me

In Chinese, pipe is called 管子 and straw is called 吸管 but 管子 can be used as well — hence the confusion 😅
