I tend to consider myself pretty good at english but this time I also got genuinely confused because I have never seen someone refer to "side dish" as just "side", and I've eaten at many english speaking restaurants

Lol 😂 we had a similar experience
We went to a noodle shop in Hong Kong and we ordered beef noodle soup. The waiter couldn’t speak English and asked what for the noodles. Us thinking that he’s asking us how the beef should be cooked
Me: medium
Sis: medium
Mom: well done
When my mom answered he looked super confused. Turned out he was asking for the spicy level of the soup 🤣
