I thought it was just me that had a difficulty when it comes to reading black literature. More often than not, it’s so heavy. But when executed the right way, the pay off is almost transformative.

Thank you for being such an avid reader and reviewer. Cause now I know which books will be worth my while. 😊

I just read this book recently and it really profoundly affected me. It was gifted to Halle Bailey, who is playing Ariel in the new live action adaptation of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, by Daveed Diggs who is not only her costar (as Sebastian) but also is a part of the group clipping. which contributed the song from which this book was developed. With all the conversation of Critical Race Theory being erased from the curriculum of schools across the United States, I think it’s a really relevant read right now and I wish a lot of people could understand that core message of not forgetting painful history but also not letting any one person/group have the burden of holding all that generational trauma, but rather carrying it together as a society to help create a better future. And I really wish to read more African stories surrounding merfolk/merfolk-adjacent watery beings! 🧜🏾‍♀️

I don’t think all Black lit is heavy, but a lot of those that are more popular has the tendency to be. It’s definitely wise to keep some of the lighter stories in the rotation.

Thanks for the review! :) Sounds like a story worth checking out. I also definitely know the feeling of opening a book, reading a couple pages and being like "omg what do all these words mean did I suddenly become illiterate?" despite reading in English for many years now. :D

I have been so excited for this book for months! But I was a bit scared of reading another heavy book from Solomon, I'm usually not triggered by books but "An unkindness of ghosts" really got to me in a not so great way (mental health wise) even though I liked the book a lot! But I'm still gonna read this one. :)
