The Aztec is something that genuinely interests me

Tens of thousands of people in neighboring tribes decided allying with the Spanish against the Aztecs was a better idea than the status quo. That speaks volumes about the nature of the Aztecs.

All cultures and civilizations of the world have an interesting dichotomy of brutality and virtue. The Aztecs were one of many.

I agree that context is key in history and people shouldn't necessarily be labeled as "evil" because somethings they did is offensive to modern sensibilities. But it should apply to all peoples and civilizations. Aztec, European, African, Asian and everyone else alike. Which means we have to look at the Spanish, Portuguese, and British Empires in the same way as the Aztec.

Their surrounding neighbors claimed they were incredibly brutal so allied with the Conquistadors to overthrow them.

I feel like history teachers just give students a link to an infographic show video and have them answer questions about what was in the video as a part of their lesson plan

The Aztec Empire fell because everyone around them hated their guts for their oppression, brutality, and frequent tithes of human sacrifices. Less than a thousand Europeans did *not* conquer 6 million Aztecs, smallpox and a quarter million recruits from the surrounding tribes did, the Spaniards just said 'hey, we _won't_ cut out and eat the hearts of your children' and the other tribes said 'sign me up!'

They were not a 'gentle people' any more than the Spaniards, British, and Japanese were 'gentle people'. They all had their virtues and evils, but mentioning that would be inconvenient, wouldn't it?

After watching this I'm researching Maya and the Three. Great film that touches on culture and art of Aztecs and more!

Here's your friendly reminder that one of those Aztec Gods is what Rayquaza from Pokemon is based on.

I will say this 1, 500 men would have an extremely hard time conquering 10 million Aztecs if a lot of those Aztecs didnt want those 1, 500 men to win. Makes more sense that a lot of those other tribes helped the Spainards. Knowing you or your family could have their hearts cut out for some god you didnt believe in. Well that is a pretty good motivator, but what truly got them was the same thing that destroyed Rome

"Oh they brutally sacrificed human beings, including children. But y'know... They had feminism though so that makes it innocent and pure 😇"

It's a shame we don't know more about the Aztec's. I wonder "What if" a lot more evidence of Aztec civilization survived the Spanish conquest. Just image what we would learn from it all. Great video.

Most civilizations have “ skeletons” in their closets.
