Took my DR650 on the gravel this morning. No ABS no traction control. What's the first thing guys do on there modern adventure bikes befor they go on the dirt is turn all that stuff off. The DR is indeed the jack of all trades and master of none. It will take u anywhere go anywhere.
I brought one of the last legal brand new ones here in NZ. Get one while you can the're a great bike.

I've had 2 DR650s and neither was that heavy. Both of mine were listed by Suzuki to be 324 lbs and in reality, both of mine were under 330. One had stock suspension and the other had Cogent suspension and although the Cogent suspension was a huge improvement, I was never anywhere or rode in a way that the stock suspension didn't handle the situation. I had a Seat Concepts low seat and by lowering the adjustment of the stock suspension, I had a seat height of only 31". I never had any mechanical problems, and I used a fender stabilizer to stiffen the front fender as I like the looks of it and the turn signals. It is a very easy bike to ride, and I loved both of them. Finally, the main thing that sold me on the DR was that not only is it a couple of pounds lighter than a Honda 300 Rally, but it is 100 lbs lighter than the KLR. There is also a ton of aftermarket support for the bike. Now for the kicker. I bought both of mine used, one a 2001 and the other a 2006 and neither had mileage over 6, 400 miles on the clocks and I paid $1800 for the 2001 and 2, 100 for the 2006. Both were in very good condition. I would definitely buy another if I had more dexterity. I'm 71 years old now.

My wife and I rode 2 from Los Angeles to Tierra Del Fuego. No issues, best bike ever. If I could only own one bike it would be a DR650.. good for around town, freeways, dirt roads and FANTASTIC in the canyons on paved roads…..You can ride it like a sports bike.

DR650 is the best bike ever.
As far as “it’s not an adventure bike” I disagree.
My DR, extensively modified, with a full load out including a complete comprehensive tool kit and spares comes in under 450 pounds with a full tank.
It stops quick, pulls away faster than most traffic, comfortably cruises at 120 KPH, good economy and lots of range with 5.3 gallons on board, low compression that will run on anything resembling gas, reliable as gravity, simple to maintain and all in about the base cost of a stock T7.
Many have chosen it for RTW trips due to several of these factors.
Pretty much any other “adventure bike” cannot match these attributes.
Even the 300 Rally has a hard time holding it together under similar use…
Other than that, good video.

I began riding and racing in 1968. My primary brand was always Suzuki. Ive owned far too many models to mention them all. Ive owned, bought and flipped and collected over 140 some odd bikes in my life. Many brands... Overall Suzuki makes the most durable and reliable bikes out of the box. Even tje hardware is heads and tails above others. I had a primary kick start DR 650 for about two years. I sold it to fund a race bike purchase at the time. I regret that sometimes. Ive owned KLRs too. But that DR was built better.
I also raced a 1990 RMX 250 for six years in weekly State level Hare Scrambles and 80% of all National GNCC races on the calender. Fluids, fork seals, rotors and pads and wheel bearings were the only real maintainence items. I never had to put a new piston in it! I only repalced rings every season! Incredible durability. Suzukis are tough.

My neighbor has a DR650 and it's mostly his 18 year old son who rides it. It has 66k KM (41k Miles) and it still runs like a new bike. Mostly ridden on road but the kid is hard on the throttle.

I own a 1988 DR BIG 750. It is a great bike and use it travelling here in Australia. It is an adventure bike.

I sold my DR650 a couple years ago when I didn't have time to ride. I'm now looking for a new do it all bike just for a change of flavor and have spent an unbelievable amount of time test riding and researching the alternatives. DRZ, KTM690, Tenere, AJP PR7, CRF300, WRF450 and the list goes on. After comparing them to my DR I realized they just don't compare. They all have their strengths but none of them beat out the DR as a jack of all trades. I disrespected the crap out of my DR. It was so cheap to buy and own that I used it for everything and tried to beat it to death. I never succeeded. It just kept on running. I put 60, 000km's on it. In hindsight I realize the reason it was so good is that I could just do as I pleased without worrying I might break something and it'd always take me home after my many crazy adventures. I'm left with no choice but to buy another DR650 as I know when measured in memories it'll beat out the competition once more.

Interesting coincidence for me that I am seeing both of your DR650 videos this morning and that fortnine also just came out with a great dr650 video. Have the day off from work today and I am picking up my first (and new) '24 dr650 later this morning. Chose new so that I could take my time getting to know it in stock trim before making what I hope are smart and thought out changes to it after putting a few miles on it. I ultimately chose the dr650 for its versatility and aftermarket support. I wanted a bike that I thought could do everything at least ok (tour/trail/commuter). I think I made the right choice... Also happy that the dealership I am buying from is selling it for approximately $1100 under MSRP.

Nicely said!
I have two of them with one set up for ADV like a "haul everything long distance" mule and the other set up as a light and fast street legal dirtbike, a steeplechase mount.
The DR650 mega-thread on advrider is what influenced me to buy my first DR and why so many former DR riders are still active, a group of really nice, helpful people. And DRRiders is another great forum.

Personally, I don't see a great reason to buy a NEW dr650. Why spend so much on a new bike when they haven't changed in years? If I was looking for another one, I'd go for one a few years old that someone else had already invested some aftermarket parts into, and it would probably still end up cheaper than a new one.

Sold my beloved super tricked out DR650 replaced it with a Husky 501S, and the Husky is okay for twice the money and engine warning lights on with dumb issues and I don't trust it and don't get the hype the super close ratio transmission to me personally is annoying. might go back to a DR

I couldn't agree more. Mine is 20 years Old. 5 months ago I went solo up to Chiang Mai, Thailand. 6000 km or 4000 miles. Great machine. No trouble at all. After your video, will keep my bike for a long time more. Thanks for sharing!!

Hello from another Andrew. Just found your channel. The DR650 is an excellent platform to make into what you want it to be. Like you sad here, jack of all trades, master of none - but you can nudge it closer to any specialty without losing much of its capability in other areas. With such an awesome owner community, and decades of aftermarket support, you can’t go wrong. Great video!

I have a WR250R. The parts are getting more expensive, and it needs premium fuel which has been an issue in some remote locations. On the street it isn't too bad, though barely acceptable on the freeway. Other than that I'm pretty happy with it, but I really want to try a DR or XR. Torque is nice.

I'm a Suzuki loyalist. I sat on a DR 650 before I bought my vstrom. The suspension was way to soft for my 280lb carcass. The foot pegs were to high cramped my knees, the seat was to narrow and hard. I don't ride on single track anymore.

I did some research before buying a motorcycle and I saw several very nice motorcycles with a lot of technology and without hesitation I bought the old and ugly DR-650 2024, after 7 months of use on asphalt, off-road, jumps, I have fallen several sometimes in the water mud and sand. If I went back I would buy the same motorcycle again, simply spectacular.
