NDS EZ-Drain vs a Gravel French Drain - And the Winner is...

Welcome to the French Drain Man Channel, where we are here to educate the homeowner so they can make a great decision for a quality yard drain system.

This is the EZ-Drain by NDS, and it’s only seven inches. That’s it. That’s all it is seven inches. It’s all its measures. Keep in mind there is a four-inch pipe in here, so there are only three- inches of aggregate. That is it.

We recommend a 14-inch by 14-inch channel of stone. It has a four-inch pipe in it, but that’s more than 300% the aggregate. So they want to say that this poly rock flows 30% better. Okay, well let’s say there, right. Let’s say they’re right, it flows 30% better, but if I have more than 300% gravel or aggregate as they do, they can’t touch it because we do a 14 by 14. Now here’s where it gets really confusing and very interesting. So this system is supposed to move all this water, and I supposed to compete with a gravel drain. We got inside this swimming pool noodle. It doesn’t have a very big inlets, and it only has four slots per valley.

Now my Subscribers are contractors, homeowners. I’ve talked to many of you, very, very smart people, educated. These claims. How has this pipe moving the kind of water they’re claiming, I don’t get it because you could only move the water that this pipe takes in. You’re moving the water as fast as the inlets will allow it. Remember the more stone the better the French Drain. Henry Flagg French popularized them in Farm Drainage. It was 1859 when in Concord Massachusetts he published a book titled "Farm Drainage ". He is credited with bringing the French drain to the United States. One of the most common problems facing farmers was to much water accumulating on perfectly good farmland making it impossible to farm. He was a educated man I believe a Harvard Graduate. He went to the United Kingdom and the Netherlands to see how they Drained wet Farmland. When he returned he called them Cellar Drains. After his passing they changed the name to French Drains in his honor sense farmable land more then doubled in the United States due to his research and travel.

You have helped me tremendously with information on my water issues. I'm doing it solo and takes an enormous amount of time and work.
But as a homeowner with limited funds and more time than money, your advice has been greatly appreciated. Thank you!.

Clay will clog your Yard Drainage System. You Tube "EZ-Drain French Drain: Tips for installing in clay soil ". The engineers got it right as they usually do. We use non woven Geotextile fabric in our Systems and NDS is telling you that the fabric that holds the styrofoam together will not get the job done in clay.

French Drain Man, Got a question for ya...When you use a nds catch basin as a French drain or sump pump discharge outlet do you drill a lot of hole in it or do you put it in as is? Thanks...

Great video French Drain Man. It's nice to put a face to the voice. I bought 6 of these EZ Flows last year because of everyone using them on that other channel and never got around to using them. This video makes sense, when you compare the 2 different methods its definitely not Apples 2 Apples. I will not put these in the ground at my house...I guess I'm stuck with them. I guess I could give a couple to the kids to use in the pool and I guess the others would be a great shipping package for my rifles🤣🤣. Again...Great Video

Hey. So I’m in Pontiac Michigan. And most of my neighbors have nds easy flow black pipes just running from their sump pump drainage going straight to the backyard from the side of their homes. Just one long pipe above ground. None of them are buried. So my question is. Why can’t I just do it this way. Instead of all the French way ???

Excellent video but I guess I don’t understand what a gravel French drain is. does Drain mean that it has a pipe? Or can it be a ditch full of gravel only?

You da man, thanks for talking good sense on an under-appreciated topic. I just had a trench dug behind my house in preparation for a big patio with retaining wall project. My trench drains down to daylight, but there are a few low spots in the trench with standing water. Do I need to worry about those low spots? They're super tricky to "remove" because half the trench area is stone (the other half clay). I can barely make a dent digging that stone.

Also, this seems like a dumbo question but... when I lay my geotextile fabric, I'm guessing I need to get all that water out of there first, right?

Thanks for your time.

I know this is a stupid question, but I know the holes have to be put down but if theres holes all the way around how does it move water throughout the pipe? also, very hard to find that style of pipe here in MD

My question is, which one is better? EZ-Drain or Gravel French Drain?
