Scratchy volume pots? Here is how to clean them safe and fast

One could carefully open up the pot by bending up the four little lashes, clean the contact path and the metal tongue with a very soft rag and some alcohol. Keeping in mind that rubbing off of the black graphite path will increase the resistance, ending up with a higher kOhm value. So it has to be done with fairy light hands. (The method of scraping off a little of the graphite can be done to get a higher Ohm pot)
The enclosure gets put and secured by bending the four lashes back in place. Also not using too much force with a pliers, because the pot will turn harder.

When I clean pot's and other controls, I follow up with DeOxit Gold. It helps keep the components clean a lot longer than with just the DeOxit Cleaner alone.

My first guitar was a Gibson SG. My mother, rest her spirit, got it for me for not dropping out in grade 10. No problems to this day.

I found that on some pots it's only a temporary solution, and they go back to being scratchy in a few days. I use Contaclean, but I reckon it's more or less the same as Deoxit.

Would you say this dirt and grime can lead to shorts? I've had a strat with major shortage/cutting out/crackling in the volume knob and pickup selector

Pots will eventually go scratchy again. I recommend replacing the pot - they cost only a few bucks

Also WD-40 works. Now somebody will probably tell me why this bad feel free to all I know is that it works.
