Young business leaders in Africa are bringing the innovation and action needed to address the climate crisis. Here are 5 examples of youth-led businesses that are leading the response to the #climateemergency empowered to scale their adaptation businesses as part of the African Youth Adaptation Solutions Challenge (YouthADAPT Challenge) of the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA), African Development Bank, and Climate Investment Funds.

The YouthADAPT Challenge is an annual competition and part of the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP), an Africa-owned and Africa-led initiative launched jointly by GCA and the African Development Bank with the support of the African Union and African leaders.

The Global Center on Adaptation is an international organization working as a solutions broker to accelerate action and support for adaptation solutions, from the international to the local, in partnership with the public and private sector, to ensure we learn from each other and work together for a climate-resilient future.

Founded in 2018, our global headquarters is hosted by the Netherlands in the largest floating office in the world in Rotterdam, with regional offices in Africa, South Asia and Asia Pacific, and a knowledge and research hub based in Groningen. Through our evolving network of offices, we engage in innovative solutions to drive adaptation at scale, high-level policy development, new research contributions, advocacy, communications, and work with our partners to deliver action on the ground.

Our work focuses on those who are the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change including the poorest people in the poorest countries. They are the least prepared to withstand the triple health, social and economic impacts of our climate emergency.

Since 2021, the Africa-owned and Africa-led Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP), has been the implementation vehicle of the vision of the Africa Adaptation Initiative, with proven results to scale adaptation. Co-designed between the African Development Bank and the Global Center on Adaptation, and endorsed by the African Union, the AAAP is mobilizing $25 billion in climate-resilient investments by 2025. In its first 24 months, the AAAP has integrated adaptation into over $5.4 billion of investments, securing resilient development objectives across 27 African countries.
