Thank you for sharing your experience. I am in my last semester and saw a Nursery RN position- days(!) open up and applied and got called for an interview the next day! It's a bit of a commute, but I think it will be worth it to have experience to want to get into the NICU.

I want to work in L&D but i'm afraid if I ever decide to travel that it would limit me because of not having experience as far as med-surg or pcu is concerned.

To become an NICU do you have to go to college or can I go straight to nursing school

I haven’t heard of waiting a year working in the nursery before actually going into the actual icu omg😭 Here in texas (houston) like say your position is level 3 nicu. During the residency program they’ll have you in the nursery maybe the first 2-3 months THEN you transition into the NICU for the rest of the program before you’re on your own.

Two years before getting into the NICU must be your hospital or area. I did a 135 hour Senior Capstone/Externship in nursing school at a Level IV NICU. When I graduated, I had two job offers. One offer was a Level III in NC and the other was a Level IV in the Midwest (not the one I did my Capstone at). I took the Level IV offer. My unit almost exclusively hires new grads into our Level IV NICU. I applied to 50-100 NICU openings and got two offers. It is possible to get a NICU job as a new grad.
