That’s why many of them are still remembered as heroes in their own countries, regardless of whether they succeeded or not....

If I may petition Wise Whistler's Beard, I think this definitely needs a sequel. Michael Collins, Francis Marion, Vo NguyenGiap, Geronimo, Red Cloud, Chief Joseph, Simon Bolivar and several others are worthy rebel legends.

You forgot about Haiti, it was a slave colony in the 1700's and the slave population overthrew the slavers and it remained a country of slaves to this day, one of the most successful slave uprisings in history as well.

Just a minor correction: Vietnam was reunified in 1976, not 1975. The Vietnam Cong ruled South Vietnam as a separate state for a year. The North didn’t really want reunification right away.
