The situation between Kosovo and Serbia is heating up as Kosovo wants to introduce a new law requiring Serbians living in northern Kosovo to exchange their Serbian license plates for Kosovar ones. This has led to widespread unrest in northern Kosovo. This unrest reached a point where two border crossings from Kosovo into Serbia were blocked and shots were fired. To calm the situation, the EU and the U.S. asked Kosovo to postpone the implementation of the new law for some time. In addition, NATO, which has some 3700 troops stationed in Kosovo, said it was ready to intervene "if stability is threatened." The situation remains tense, but both parties have a reason to bury the hatchet because both countries want to join the EU, and that cannot happen until they resolve their problems with each other.
