The Great Filter - Professor Brian Cox

Показать описание
The Great Filter is the idea that, in the development of life from the earliest stages of abiogenesis to reaching the highest levels of development on the Kardashev scale, there is a barrier to development that makes detectable extraterrestrial life exceedingly rare. The Great Filter is one possible resolution of the Fermi paradox.

Oh man. This is the kind of stuff that just makes you think. I've never even heard of civilization filters, but that's pretty much the best way to describe it. ❤

There are many filters with a higher and higher probability every time of being the one that stops further progress. Flip a coin 1000 times and what is the percentage that you will land on heads every time. Odds might be better by some figure of like 2/3 or 3/4 per coin toss, but that becomes trivial the more instances of coin tosses you have.

Can we predict our future potential filters? Nuclear war, celestial events, asteroid, famine...

Someone needs to follow Brian Cox around with a video camera and record all his musings for a week! 😊

We are the only ones in the universe because we happen to be the latest creation so consequently we are currently in 3d. In 3d we are it no one here but us because everyone else who is millions of years older than us has ascended out of 3d int a higher multidimensional dimension. There are millions of civilizations out there but not in 3d. 3d world with 3d equipment that can only detect 3d can not detect something above 3d.

My own understanding, is there are billions of planets with "life" though not civilisations, where their creatures enjoy existing and their lives, and care of their others. That's enough for me.

If anyone looks up at infinity and believes we are the only things alive they are so far beyond stupid they cannot be reached 😮

Or. There is no filter. There is no evidence of one.

Lets imagine that life itself is pretty ordinary. On Earth, pretty much as soon as life could exist, it did exist. So why should anywhere else be different?

Ok so then, what causes multi-cellular life to spontaneously happen? Oxygen. You need the single celled life to evolve to produce oxygen, then you have the energy to support multicellular life.

So then you have a true multitude of ways in which that multicellular life can present itself, and very very occasionally, it presents as intelligent. Well now what you meed is for one of those intelligent occurrences to present with complex communication abilities, the capacity to carry a load without hindering movement, and fine motor control.

So now you have a life-form that is strong enough to build its own shelter and make and use its own tools, as well as be able to provide its ideas to others.

And now you need that life-form to take this communication of its ideas, and record them. Because this is will release the life-form from the burden of carrying them around, will provide others of its kind the chance to spread them, remove the necessity to continually reinvent, and enable others to refine and improve.
So you need writing.
And now, it can socialise its knowledge and intelligence.

The problem, mind you, with socialised knowledge and reasoning, is that a lit of it is wrong, and it will be committee by creatures who evolved from hierarchical social structures. And so the next thing this creature needs is to be courageous enough to separate social leadership from social dominance and social endeavour.

I’d say we, as a species, are still in the middle of that bit.

Well what if like single cell organisms forming into multicellular organisms, we as a mutitude of muticellular organisms form a new kind of of organism that is not just a multicelled orfanism but a life form made up of many multicellular organisms that make up an entity greater than we are on our own; like a multi cellular organism is greater than a single cellular organism. We create food for all the cells that make us up, whereas a single cell gas to find food or hibernate. Perhaps there is a short period of hibernation in our future. As a christian i dont believe that, but based solely on this subject from a strictly fictional perview. Who tf knows, but life is better eith spiritual oeace so im flad were not becoming a multicellular blod controlled by AI dominating the stars through subjegation.
