Personally, I believe the great filter is time.

The universe isn't young in any magnitude. It took us barely a century to go from vacuum tube calculators to quantum mechanics based external world brains that go well beyond cognition. Just 100, 000 years for scale is enough to give rise to and destroy a sapient species.

Maybe we aren't alone after all. We just missed our neighbors by a few million years.

This planet has too many conflicting religious and cultural differences to be classed as intelligent or advanced.
We hold ourselves in such high self-esteem and praise each other on our achievements, but yet still we ignore the fact that people are starving, homeless and used as currency across the globe.

Why is it that we bathe in glorious ideology of space travel to seek out new life and spend millions on science and technology, yet some can't even afford to feed themselves.
