What's Inside A Rattlesnake's Tail?

If you look inside a rattlesnake rattle, you’ll find it’s actually hollow. Instead of shaking loose bits like a maraca to make that famous sound, rattlesnakes clack together segments of keratin — the same material found in your fingernails. They use three shaker muscles to vibrate the tips of their tails up to 90 times a second, which is many times faster than you can blink!

That's not a rattle snake, that's a shakey snake

Yes let's compare a human's normal blinking rate to a rattle snake's 90 rattles per second.

If you ever hear one in person, it’s truly terrifying!

So they literally evolved their tails into warning signals for other creatures to back off. They just wanted to live a perhaps quiet life.

Yeah, as you have guessed. *_Killer Queen has already touched the read more button._*

It can shake its tale 90 times per second. Just for comparison's sake, it takes the earth a full year to revolve around the sun.

Why would you compare the vibration of 90x a second to a human blinking about 20 times a minute? Makes no sense. Like 2000rpm compared to a grandmother groceryshopping 4 times a month.

I used to work in a horse vet hospital. We got this one horse that got bit on the nose by a rattlesnake. His face swelled up massively, including his eyelids. It was touch & go for weeks, but it eventually survived.

I had a rattlesnake just outside my back door a few weeks ago. I didn't know it until I started to step out. It caught me off guard when it rattled to warn me. It scared the breath out of me! Good thing it wasn't a baby rattlesnake...I could have been bitten! 😟😱

Rattlesnakes evolved their rattle not just to scare predators, but to warn deer and bison from accidentally trampling them.
