I love how you analyzed the timing, speed, height issue: Barshim DID jump higher in that one jump, but his trajectory wasn't quite right to carry him over clean.

Awesome content as always. I remembered those years when Sotomayor was dominant, but also disadvantaged by the global boycotts of Cuba. As a fellow West Indian (Caribbean), I take great joy in knowing this record along with many of the other iconic T&F records are held by my Caribbean peeps. Keep it up guys...

I was a high jumper. Still will sit and watch both men abs women jumpers. My best clearance was 6'10"and was over 7'but the bar fell. 8' is just so out there that I still have a hard time believing. Once in a lifetime feat.

I saw him at the the international meeting Ivo Vandame in Brussels more than 30 years ago....he was already a legend...

Cubans are definitely special when it comes to jumping. One of the greatest volleyball player Mireya Luis was also part of the legendary Cuban Volleyball team that won 3 gold medals in Olympics. And despite her sub-par height, her incredible vertical jumps are what made her legendary in volleyball history. I think one can give lots of Cuban athletes as an example in that category...

Stefan Holm from sweden also cleared 2.40m. One of the greatest Flyer

7:12 if this was his actual 2.40m jump he cleared by a ton. Not only his butt but also legs and heals compared to his other jumps.

7:22 - Stefan Holm would probably like to be added to that list since he jumped 2.40 in Madrid in 2005. Holm being just 1.81 meters tall also makes him pretty unique in having jumped 59(!) centimeters more than his own height. (Sotomayor: 1.93m / Barshim: 1.89m / Bondarenko: 1.98m / Sjöberg: 2.00m / Paklin 1.93m )

Barshim's 2, 43 were excellent, but the bar was shaking a bit, he touched it with his calfs as far as I can see - I don't think he would have jumped over 2, 45. Now Barshim has already crossed his zenith - crazy how fast time flies. We will have to wait for another talent.

One of your better vids. I was a high jumper and actually competed against Dwight Stones when he was the world record holder. I ran sprints and did the long jump as well. It was a great feeling to break the tape in a race, but there's nothing to compare with the feeling clearing a bar that's higher than the top of your head. How I wish the networks who broadcast the Olympics and other events show the competitions. Often you get a quick one-time replay of the winning jump. Sad.

Hold on. Barhim's torso cleared the 2.43 by a significant margin, but his legs just barely made it over. Had the bar been any higher, he would not have succeeded.

Take a look at Artur Partyka’s (of Poland) clearance over 2.37 in 1996 Olympics by almost 15 centimeters. Some say THAT was the highest jump in history.

After all these years it's still mind boggling to watch Sotomayor do his thing. That man was truly phenomenal

Sotomayer's HJ WR was to be broken, it definitely was that year 2014 when Barshim was in his prime and I don't think there is any doubt he did have the talent to break it back then, but sadly that time has passed now, as he did suffer an injury sometime after 2014 and of course Father Time has occurred so its really unlikely he ever gets that close to challenging the WR ever really sad thing is, we will have to wait another 20 to 30 years before someone else comes along to challenge the Sotomayer WR

Sotomayor is the GOAT, but Stefan Holm at1m 81 is even more impressive. Had he been 6’4” he would have needed an air traffic controller.

Barshim's jumps just look so elegant and fluid. Like he's being poured over the crossbar.

I gazed at the corner of my wall and ceiling several times during this video.
