I think the point was that Aang wasn't as good a dad as Tenzin thought, but not as bad a dad as Kya and Bumi were saying either. He clearly cared about all of them, he just had problems from both being from a society that doesn't do parent structures, along with trying to rebuild an entire nation.

Like he tried. But naturally because Tenzin was the only one who actually inherited the airbending. Naturally he did get more attention from his father. Learning airbending.

When you realize that Aang had nobody for majority of his life as father figure or anything of that kind, except the monk he viewed as a friend and mentor but he lost him as well when frozen (he is still not a teenager at the beginning) so therefore how he raised his kids I considered him an awesome father (he accepted who they are, didn't force them not anything, yes he favored Tenzin but all the future of Air Nomads was on his back and Tenzin was the one and only key)

It really broke my heart when Kya said to Tenzin "We are Aang's children, too" referring to her and Bumi.

Aang wasn't a bad father, he was a flawed individual doing his best. He didn't know how to be a father from the start not least of all because he hadn't had the experience of having a nuclear family, that just isn't how the air nomads did things, he was raised on a "it takes a village to raise a child" mentality because it worked well for him, but as much as he did have friends he didn't quite have the same support system. All of his friends were these big important people so it fell to him and Katara. She knew a lot better than him how to parent given her history, but this is more a case of someone who's trying his best, but doesn't know how to show love the way his kids wanted

Interesting how Aang and Toph had not the best relationships with their kids but Zuko who has the worst childhood seemed to have the best relationship with his daughter

Most kids aren't actually interested in learning deep stuffs like culture, history, etc, very few are, even Aang wasn't paying attention when I was learning waterbending, even Tenzin told Bumi that he reminded him of their dad due to his flamboyant character.

That said, as the kids grow older, they might have realised that it matters to do. I do agree with some that Aang wasn't as bad as a father as people think he is, but he definitely has his flaws. With kids of mixed heritage family, it's natural for them to feel inclined to one particular side, whether that be the dad's side or the mum's side. The siblings turned out well in the end.

The funny part is Kya is a wandering spirit like an Air Nomad just using a different element. Tenzin although highly versed in Air Nomad is more like his caregiving mother Katara. His love of his family was probably he couldn’t spirit walk. He’s focused on everyone else so he can’t let go. Bumi went off and did his own thing. He might not have been a practicing Nomad but walked his own path like one. And he definitely inherited his Father’s humor.

I actually really like the angle of Aang not being the best father, he barely had one himself and we see all the ATAB how important his culture is to him so his focus naturally drifted to the child who showed the most interest in it, wanting to keep his history alive. He was never spoken to be abusive or negligent, just having his focus elsewhere.

I feel like Aang didn't want to push anything because he was exactly like his kids when he was younger, he never got to mess around and be a kid because he was the avatar so he didn't want to force them into air bender culture like how he was forced into all these things as a child

The issue is, Tenzin was the only airbender
Literally the only one in the world besides Aang
Aang was probably desperate to ensure his culture wouldn't die so he spent more time with him
Not intencionally but he ended up allienating his other 2 children
Remember when Tenzin was remembering ''their'' adventures with Aang amd they told them they were never there
His older brother is worse because he wasn't even a bender, that's why hr went to the mlitary to prove that he was capable too like his bender siblings

I really liked that they made Aang an imperfect father because that's what both ATLA and TLOK are about- realizing that even heroes are flawed people and that it is impossible to be perfect. Aang wasn't a perfect dad but he did his best and that's what matters. ATLA is the story of a normal boy learning to be avatar, TLOK is about an avatar learning to be a normal girl- both stories focus on humanity first and foremost and Aangs (understandable) shortcomings as a father serve to as a plot device to teach Kora about the importance of being a human as well as an avatar.

I think the point is that Aang wasn’t perfect. He didn’t neglect his children he was just trying to save his culture by teaching Tenzin everything he knew. That includes being a free spirit and doing cool shit like riding giant koi with your dad.

Aang also had a very busy life as Avatar unbleeping the world from the Hundred Years war effect on the living/spirit balance taking time away from all of his kids.

Something similar actually happened in my family, my dad loves us very much but my oldest brother doesn't have a lot in common with him unlike me and our other brother. This means he will be left out when we hang out because we know he went enjoy what we have planned, this is something that's been bothering my dad for years because he doesn't want ny bro to feel left out

It’s Naruto and Boruto situation, where Aang and Naruto can’t be a full time parent to their children because they had the literal weight of the world on their shoulders.

I really believe he wasn't an overall bad father. His priorities as a father got outshone by his duties to his culture and being the Avatar. Even when Tenzin was recognized as an Airbender, Aang mentored him more than fathered him. Like he said in the fog to Tenzin, he has a false perception of who his father is.

Aang had to rebuild a nation, while being the avatar, and still made the effort. Sometimes as kids, we don't appreciate some of the things parents try to do for us, and that's a shame, because his relationship with Tenzen could just be closer because Tenzen actually took his father's teachings to heart.

At that point I probably wouldn't want to be an Airbender anyway. I'd love to be one during the old days, living in the temples and exploring the world on a flying bison. But being one of the only airbenders left on the planet? I don't want to be THAT special.
If I was Aang and Kataras kid, I'd probably just hope that I got the water ending.

Also everyone should keep in mind that in air nomad culture the community raise the kids not just 2 parents, so in his life aang didnt have a mother or father figure just his community so raising kids with only another person is a completely new territory for him
