ZOOM R20 Multi Track Recorder: MIDI Implementation Explained

MIDI is alive and well on R20, though the “IN” and “OUT” MIDI ports are long gone. Many have complained about that missing feature for good reasons, but MIDI functionality still exists. I cover the unit’s features, how to connect external MIDI devices, and detail the entire R20 MIDI implementation specification. Watch all of this presentation now to find out what R20 can and can’t do with MIDI, and get the information you need and deserve. #ZOOMr20 #MIDI #ZoomR20MIDI

It surprises me how many folks think the R20 doesn’t have any MIDI implemented due to the lack of the standard in and out MIDI ports. It really shouldn’t because that’s one of the first things many folks look for and expect when they view the back panel of a unit. While most top companies have abandoned MIDI altogether on their external multi-track recorders at the $400 price range and below, Zoom has not. What do you think about this state of affairs?

Thank you for the information in this video. I play guitar live operating very portably, backpack light. I use a simple sequencer for some rhythm and chord progressions for backup. I would love to be able to analog record some performances with digital timing info from the sequencer. Just haven't found any portable solution for this yet.

Loving your channel!

Can you export midi files from an R20 recording ? For example to reprint a piano performance with better sounds in a DAW later

Hi! I really want some help with some things before taking the plunge and buying them (the korg volca sample2 and the zoom R20)

Can i somehow sync the Volca to the r20 somehow? Or can i get away with matching the BPMs on both devices and somehow having a record pre-count on the r20 so i have to manually press play on the Volca when the r20 starts to record?
Hopefully my questions makes sense, im very new to this kind of things

Hey can I use this to send midi out, so I can use my keyboard as a multitimbral player instead of the R8sounds?

Hi!
Would you happen to know if a Roland TR-8s has the proper ports and function to midi sync with the zoom r20?
Also, besides the tascam model 12 and R20... do any other multi-track recorders in the modern era have midi capabilities?? The model 12 doesn't have a built in metronome and that's kind of a deal breaker for me.. the r20 didn't have enough line inputs for me.

Thanks!

Off topic but do you know a way to get a track to play repeatedly (gets to the end and automatically starts over again)

I'm seriously considering this device, mainly because I'm tired of struggling with MIDI delay, which seems to come and go on my setup. I miss the says of an old hardware wave table. It used to be effortless to play along with myself in the late 90s and early 2000s, no matter how many tracks. How responsive is the R20? Will I notice a delay?

Second, Can I export my MIDI compositions to my computer? I might want to commit a track to one of my PC's VSTs and then import a wave file to my R-20 after generating a track.
