It's a visual and metaphysical feast for the mind and eyes.

1:57 - 'like with any Jodorowsky film, there is no point in trying to explain it in terms of plot'. This has a simple plot, with a very clear 3-act structure. El Topo is pretty straightforward (well, as straightforward as cyclicality can be) plot to anyone with any knowledge of Christian and/or Buddhist symbolism, metaphysics etc. It's really a pretty basic story of ego, death and rebirth, and enlightenment. I hate when reviewers aren't equipped to understand a film (I read peter bradshaw's review and this was painfully the case with him) and all they have to say is 3freaky5me. Spirituality and symbolism must be a huge blind-spot for Kermode

For desert island movies I think this is only behind The New World for me.

Saw it when I was 18yo & did a complete 180° on how I saw visual storytelling.

Actually, you need some kind of higher state of mind to make more sense of it

I really loved it, until they were killing real animals for their shots, then I felt inredibly sick and had to turn it off.
