What are 'private' license plates? Let's verify

Driving around North Carolina, it's not unusual to see license plates from other states or even dealer plates, but a recent social media post is raising questions about a new type of plate that's been seen around Charlotte.

A Reddit user posted a photo of what appears to be a specialized "private" license plate and asked if it was legal and how someone would get approved for it. The post has over 150 comments and shares with the original poster asking if anyone else had seen this and why someone would use it.

The plate reads private and has an earth sign on it. VERIFY Google searched this and found a link to Amazon. It's known as a "sovereign citizen" license plate. The plate also reads, "No driver's license or insurance required and not for commerce use or private mode of travel."

So what is a sovereign citizen? The UNC School of Government says it's a catch-all phrase referring to a variety of anti-government people and groups. As per the 2022 US code Title 18 part 1 chapter 2 section 31 (18 U.S.C. S31) a-6

A motor vehicle-the term motor vehicle means every description of carriage or other contrivance propelled or drawn by mechanical power and USED FOR COMMERCIAL PURPOSES on the highways in the transportation of passengers, passengers and property, or property or cargo.

(A-10) used for commercial purposes- the term “used for commercial purposes” means the carriage of persons or property for any fare, fee, rate, charge or other consideration, or directly or indirectly in connection with any business, or other undertaking intended for profit.

We have a constitutional right to travel, and a right to life, liberty, and property as per the 14th amendment, you are not a driver of a motor vehicle if you are not engaged in commerce you are simply traveling in your private conveyance.

Wrong cause you do not need a license or reg only if ur using the roads for commerce and driving a commercial vehicle ur license is a contract so if you don't cancel your contract which gives them the right to pull you over and blah blah but if you cancel your contract with DMV because are travel for personal business then you do my not need a license but be careful because it's wordplay because driving means for higher making money on the highway and operating means for hire which means you'd make money on the highway the only thing that doesn't is travel you don't want you don't want to be on record stating that you're driving your vehicle

I got pulled over 4 times by sheriff with sovereign private and pull over by cops some other cops pass me by while tailgate they said it doesn't come out in the system then they tell me take it off but i haven't yet i haven't done nothing illegal or traffic problem luckily im get it registered tho on hold for 2 year

Can't be sovereign and a citizen at the same time 😂 there is a way to accomplish what these people are trying to do, but they've got it all wrong. Do not go to war with these people - you will lose. Register your vehicle, get their licenses, follow the rules, but quietly and lawfully rule it all; and when you do this correctly, you won't ever have to run or be afraid of anyone or agency. Once the cop discovers who you are, they'll apologize for disturbing you and run away from you - true story! I won't say how to accomplish this because it's not for public consumption and is a test for every being on the planet. Stop being distracted and study yourselves and the law; commerce law, trust law, and biblical/quranic laws, specifically. The LAWS not RELIGION!! Religion is the smoke screen. If you don’t want to register your car, leave it in any state except the state you reside in. My mom had a summer house out of state and stopped registering her car and stopped getting it inspected. Out of state cops can’t give you a ticket for it. You still need insurance but I don’t know if there would be a problem if you cause an accident in an unregistered vehicle

There's actually a rather humorous and somewhat annoying "sovereign citizen" strategy and manner of conduct during traffic stops. When speaking to an officer the sovereign citizen will roll down his window about an inch and talk through the opening. They will refuse every legal request and ask for a supervisor. Ultimately, they will be asked to get out of their vehicle because the vehicle is going to be towed and impounded for lack of registration, insurance, etc. Those who refuse get arrested.

Even if there was a factual basis for the sovereign citizen claims, taxpayers paid for those roads and the government gets to say who can use them.
