What was supposed to be a 4 day UK & Scotland road trip was aborted on the first day. My Porsche Cayman 981 GT4 wasn't made for road surfaces like this. That's my opinion and I'm sticking with it.

I'd sooner stay at home than drive on roads like this again.

I'm British Indian. 30 years ago when I got married I went to India for 5 weeks for a holiday. I came back and felt grateful to be back in the UK, even though I paid 40% income tax in a big chunk of money every year. The reasons I was grateful were
1. Great roads .
2. The police would turn up when needed
3. I could visit my GP anytime without an appointment .
4 a sense of security
5 yes, I paid a lot of tax, but felt it was worth it for all the public services we got - everything worked
6 a polite and respectful and decent public

Fast forward 30 years and I'm selling up and relocating abroad.

The pot holes are emblematic of a country in freefall.

Potholes fair enough you have a point but complaining about the width of the roads you chose to drive on? Get real. Cornwall is full of tiny narrow lanes and we have no trouble squeezing through the tightest gaps. Maybe you just need to improve your driving? Or get a vehicle suitable for the kind of roads you want to drive on?

FFS! There is NO such thing as Road Tax in the UK!

I have carbon fibre wheels and the state of the UK roads are at a point where they are ruining the fun of motoring. I use Waze to get notifications of potholes but as they're everywhere now, that's also fairly pointless. It's funny how the councils can spend millions creating bus lanes and road closures in cities that actually create more traffic problems but they can't fund proper maintenance of the existing roads. I hate to think what it must be like as a cyclist or motorbike rider.

Brilliant video Max my Cayman R handles the bumps quite well, but I find myself constantly looking down for those potholes, my wife’s Abarth is a different story if that hits the smallest of potholes it shakes your teeth out. For the amount of road tax we have to pay it’s shocking the state of our roads.
Keep up the great videos, cheers Lee.

It's got to the point where buyers choose cars based on their ability to deal with these roads, and manufacturers engineer features to cope with them, so the motorist is paying in multiple ways for the problem, whilst authorities do nothing.

It is a disgrace (plain & simple) most of us now use the Pot-Hole shuffle when driving just to try and save our vehicles from damage.
Yet we have untold millions (if not billions) to spend on this or that overseas and the hordes who arrive every day by dingy.

I live up around Aberdeen, and the roads here are an absolute disgrace. But the councils would rather spend money on stupid tourism projects that nobody wanted, then turn around and say they don't have the money to fix the roads. Went over to the USA last October, and I don't think I encountered a single proper pothole until we got to the cities. The countryside outback roads were absolutely phenomenal, proper roads you could drive on. And if you had a sports car, have proper fun on. The UK government just don't care about drivers and cars, so they'll make driving as miserable of an experience as possible because they clearly don't care about driving or the citizens who use them.

Plenty of money for cycle paths and road calming though. Also heavily influenced by who complains, I live in Berkshire and the roads are terrible, but there has been a number of roads leading to very wealthy areas that have been resurfaced when they were in good condition. Very frustrating!

This situation has been in the making for nearly half a century. 40-50 years ago a cross party political consensus came into being to allow the UK's non trunk roads to gradually deteriorate on the simple basis that due to the extensive tarmaccing of our road network post 1918, they were now deemed too expensive to maintain long term. You leave a main road at your peril nowadays and the situation is only going to get worse, alas.

Potholes are terrible. Worst I’ve ever seen in over 30 years of driving in UK. First time ever I had to get recovered 2 weeks ago after pothole took out brand new PS4S on my Boxster. I was only doing 35 mph in Sussex, moved to miss one and ended up in bigger one.

Biggest problem is I’m now scanning road directly in front of car when driving, and less on what’s coming ahead in distance. Not good.

Hey Max I have to watch out for these vehicle traps even in my van, let alone driving the Porsche …… Russian roulette comes to mind.

It is a scandal how much we pay in road fund tax only to have road maintenance ignored. Literally daylight robery

I`ve never known a period when the roads have been this bad in the UK, it`s a disgrace! Spend your entire time dodging round pot holes and sunken grids. Totally get why you cut the road trip, short.

Lets vote for a Cayman GT4 Dakar for UK customers :)

Agree totally about the state of UK roads which are dreadful where I live on the Greater London/Surrey border near the M25. Didn't make for enjoyable driving in the Porsche 996 GT3 I owned for many years. Seems councils would rather spent money elsewhere and I think the situation is made worse by the number of SUV's on the road and EV's with their heavy batteries.

A trip to Radlet and St Albans proved very costly for my Cayman due to nasty craters on the road. The ugly state of our roads is a national scandal!!

The subjects will accept whatever the UK plc owners see fit to provide. And they will pay their taxes and be grateful, as the life of a serf could always be worse.
