Recuva worked for me as I formatted the disk. It took days to run, then once it finished overnight, next day everything was shut down and I lost that status screen so had to start again. But only had to run it for about 10 minutes, hit cancel, then all the recovered files came up, I think because I had total of 200k plus files it must have bombed out, so just started it again, let it run for a few hours, then once it says it has found the files, and I could see about 170k files at that point and hit cancel and then the option came up with all the files listed by category and then I went and recovered by category as didn't want to recover all files as some were duplicates. I bought a new SSD drive to put all this recovered data on and now I will just keep my HDD drive and if I find that anything is missing, will just have to go back via Recuva and recover those files. Thanks for the video, lots of great information and interesting to know that its still possible to recover files after format. Key point: When running Recuva, once it has said its found x number of files, if that is approx what you are looking for, just hit the cancel button, do not need to let it run for days but if you are only dealing with small amount of files it should be quick, I think in my case it was slower as so many files I had on my HDD.

great thanks, I thought doing a chkdsk should fix it but I was not entering the correct drive letter format(chkdsk /f instead of chkdsk f: /f), no wonder it didn't work for me. It fixed it in 30 seconds. I'm thinking I need to do a "eject usb" before I shutdown the comp, is that the way it should be done always?
