In this video, we are going to learn how to write ambient music like the soundtrack to Skyrim.

Ambient music is one of the most popular genres around. And imitating the Skyrim soundtrack is easily one of my most highly requested videos!

In this video, we'll learn how to create the signature sound of the popular fantasy game, by learning how to write epic/cinematic chord progressions. Then we'll learn about structure and arranging for this genre, before ending it all with a look at general instrumentation and orchestration.

🔗 list of links mentioned in the video:

🔊Sound Libraries & VSTs
- Men of the North, Women of the North, Voxos, Voces 8

- Albion One, Cine-Strings

Pads/Synths - Quetzal Sounds
- Ethnic Winds

You can listen to a playlist of music I wrote using this template (and a few others I created by studying the Skyrim OST) here:

Thanks for yuor efficient explanation. I love it when tutors don't waste my time with stuff like an update on their dog.

I make this sort of style, but this is a really good basis for beginners to learn from, and the fact that you can get great results just with a few simple chord progressions and well chosen instruments and choirs :) subbed you channel, keep up the great work.

Very much appreciated, been lost with how to create variance to make my atmospheric tracks interesting to listen to instead of just boring pads, this was a massive help!

Soule wouldn't go to the major V - i resolution every 8 bars. That kind of strong motion is usually avoided to create a timeless, ambient sound. In fact, the Skyrim soundtrack only has a few of those cadences in general.

EXCELLENT TUTORIAL, I'm not even interested in making ambient music, but I learned a lot here, I definitely appreciate your clear, relaxed and lucid teaching style.. Subbed, liked, ringing that bell, etc... Btw. 'IT'S' = it is. The word ITS is the possessive form. I thought you 'd appreciate that, as someone dedicated to detail...
