While we were have known for a long time that the early revision timing chain tensioners had problem, the timing chain stretch is becoming more common. Make sure to check your VW or Audi 2.0t TSI for this issue to prevent a major engine failure.

The timing chain slip occurs when a worn out and shifted under tension chain lands at a wrong tooth. The crankshaft pulley has 42 teeth, 360deg/42 = 8.57deg - angular distance between any two crankshaft teeth. So, the critical point for crankshaft slip is 8.57/2 = 4.28deg. But this is the shift between the crankshaft and chain landing at the teeth.
This application measures the total phase error between the crankshaft and camshaft, and the camshaft will have its own phase shift added to the total measured phase value: 360/46teeth/2 = 3.91deg. So, the critical measured phase angle is: 4.28 + 3.91 = 8.19deg. - this is the tripping point at which your chain is guaranteed to slip.

This video saved my engine. I did this can 3 months ago and it showed -4.9, I drove it while saving up for a new chain. I started hearing a rattle and I finally replaced the chain this past 3 days. My timing chain cover had scratch and cut marks from the chain. I replaced with new cover everything sealed tight. My car now drives smoother and the rattle is gone and the obd11 value is -0.58

Super helpful!!. I have a mk7 gli and heard some rattling, so I was freaking out. 130kkm sitting at 4.31 definitely going to change this asap! You da man for giving specs! Exactly what I was looking for.

Just make sure you change the oil on time, bad / not enough oil is the biggest reason for time stretch.

Mine was a ~-5, 5° and the exhaust one was already one tooth over, so I was pretty lucky to get out with a healthy engine in the end.

This is such nonsense by VAG. How did they manage to eff up the chain system on this engine *so* badly? First there's the moronic earlier chain tensioner with a thin metal strap that is essentially a time bomb they somehow thought was a good idea; then this "chain stretch" nonsense? One of major reasons for chains v. belts is that they're supposed to be more reliable and much longer lasting. The "cost" for using a chain instead of a belt is more noise, not a bunch of issues. *Somehow* they've managed to make an engine with a chain that has absolutely no benefit over a belt, has more chance of catastrophic failure, more paranoia, and more things to worry about! Basically the entire opposite of the peace of mind a chain is *supposed* to give. Way to go Audi!

They really ought to be accountable for this and give some kind of warranty extension of this nonsense chain design. It's pretty ridiculous to have to worry about a chain and tensioner that has the capability of destroying your engine which will cost several thousand to repair if it happens, all because they screwed this up so bad.

Thanks for teaching us. I just checked mine it was -2.45° . So that's good then

Thank you for the explaination ! I think mine has been replaced in the lifetime of the car, it currently sits at 183 000 kilometers with 3.19 degres with a little push of the throttle (even lower at idle, something along -2.69). Still gonna make it checked at volkswagen CC just to be sure, especially the tensionner because the chain seems to be fine !

If you have anything at -4 and -5, you should check for the screen on the camshaft bridge.

I checked my 2013 CC with 130000 miles and got -5.07 guess its time to buy a kit

Just had mine done. 2011 at 65K at the time I got it done. The actual tensioner was getting close to fail (was getting the valve gasket leak done at the time as well) so I upgraded to the newer one.

Thanks for the extremely helpful vid. My car is right at 5 deg.(2006 audi A4 2.0t). I have misfiring and/or rough idle when the car is cold start. Once it warms up its smooth but has that light diesel sound. I feel like I'm on borrowed time now. Lots of list for this car.

2013 VW GLI DSG, the first car we ever bought new. CBFA has 209k miles now. Common wear items replaced. Brakes, tires, broken suspension springs, and 1 wheel bearing. In the engine bay, I've only changed a water pump, the cooling fans, oil pressure sensor, plugs, coils, and a few cheap amazon PCV assemblies. OEM battery lasted almost 9 years, Still original turbo as well! I am at -7.? on OBD11. Only codes are for the intake flapper occasionally, runs great. I was just quoted $7k plus for chain service at local dealer. Ummm, no! This is why I do all the work I can myself in my driveaway, no garage. Gathering parts now to do this myself over the coming weeks. I've run Walmart Supertech full synthetic oil since maybe 80k miles. I have a noticeable oil leak, assuming lower timing cover. So it gets newer oil added pretty regularly! Its my work car now, but, I still love it! I plan on this being my 14 yr olds first car. I am making sure it will make it for her. It's no show car, but for being in the Northeast it's whole life, it still cleans up pretty good! These type of videos really help me keep it going! Thanks guys!!
