Holly smokes, how did this channel go under my radar?! Amazing stuff, very informative. Even as an experienced artist I still love watching tutorials where I actually learn something new. You are never too good to learn something new or too bad to start improving your art <3

I've collected a wide range of inking tools at this point. I believe the reasons mangaka often work with dip pens tend to be along the lines of:

1. A higher friction tool for controlled lines. The scratchiness of a G-nib slows you down and makes each mark more deliberate.
2. A more crisp edge than alternatives(felt tip edges tend to feather a bit more, fountain pens don't grab the paper as much until you get down to EF nibs, and then they often start having ink flow issues)
3. Expressive flex points - it's faster to vary pressure than to go back over a line to sculpt it.

Before there were Microns, the biggest alternative to dip pens was brush, and brush can ink stuff in a flash and get some great line variation as well, but it's super tough to control and favors a more choppy look overall, so when a mangaka uses it, it tends to be embraced as their whole style. Ballpoints(including roller and gel) were never really competitive on line quality because the control and the mark made varies too much with the ball's rotation and the ink's pressure; fresh refills and near-empty ones behave differently. The Papermate Flair introduced a plastic tip design that predated the Micron, and a few folks in the West like Alex Toth would use those, but they don't use pigmented ink, so the art fades which makes it unappealing as a resaleable original. (The Pentel Tradio Stylo is a modernized take on this, still using a dye ink, but now with a cartridge) Technical pens were also used by a few Westerners(most notably Robert Crumb) but they are maintenance nightmares and mostly got superseded by the fineliners.

Today you can step down to brush markers and get most of the effect of brush, with less cleanup and more control. There's a huge variety of those with different levels of firmness and springiness. So they're my go-to for most traditional inks; the tactility of a brush as the tip squashes down is not replicated in digital. But the extremely clean, polished edges are still done best in traditional by having a sharp nib carve up the paper a bit, and digital can claim those particular marks better and faster.

Mokona of CLAMP uses markers to do the majority of her manga but she used Nib pens in her debut...and switched to markers early in her career.
