How the Covid-19 pandemic is threatening Africa’s wildlife - BBC News

A wildlife catastrophe is unfolding in Africa, according to park rangers and conservation experts.

They say the closure of safari tourism, due to the coronavirus pandemic, is decimating the industry, and leading to an increase in poaching.

The African tourism industry is worth almost $30 billion a year and employs almost four million people.

Experts and rangers on the ground say they are seeing a surge in poaching as thousands of unemployed people dependent on the industry turn to wild animals for food.

They also fear an upsurge in more organised poaching of endangered species.

Just 100 years ago, there were more than 200, 000 wild lions living in Africa. Today, there are only about 20, 000; lions are extinct in 26 African countries and have vanished from over 95 percent of their historic range. And their p0pulation continues to decrease as the human p0pulation increases. ~

India also has lost vast swathes of forests due to growing p0pulation and urbanisation in recent decades, as a result- Endangered elephants and tigers are k.illing one person a day in India as humans continue to encroach on the little habitat that these animals have left.~

I'm from Colorado, USA and mountain lions and bears are routinely being tranquilized and killed because we humans have invaded the little habitat animals have left. If you truly care about endangered animals then do not repr0duce any kids.~

Watching this shows me that so little has changed and probably will, as far as how Africa is viewed/seen as, is concerned.

First was, "we're expecting dead bodies in thousands on the streets", now it's "we're expecting thousands of animals being killed for food due to unemployment".
