It is both frightening and sad to listen to an obviously intelligent guy fight his own intelligence so hard because somebody told him to.

The caller is an example of someone so internally conflicted by a barrage of gaslighting and misdirection over the years that he would inadvertently vote Tory because "it's better the devil you know".

This has become the British definition of fairness, "drag everyone else down to my level".

Another example of “I’ve struggled, so so should you”.

The way James handles these calls is truly extraordinary. He isn’t setting traps like they often suggest. He’s just letting them contradict themselves.

Why is it so hard for us, as humans, to say “actually you’re right, fair enough”

We can’t be right 100% of the time

"That is an argument for paying doctors more, not paying drivers less" - this is the difference between someone who gets it, and someone who doesn't. We all need better working conditions, and until workers from all walks of life support each other, things won't change

Governments must love people like this. they stand up for their employers and attack other workers.

I found James' comment on "I think you deserve them too" incredibly disarming and genuine. It sounds like the caller doesn't understand what it is to be kind to yourself and extend that kindness to others. The perfect example of "stiff upper lip" through the armed forces and has clearly embodied that lesson many years into his civilian life and can't seem let go of that identity.

As a 19 y/o Cadet he wished he had had more support yet he hates the Unions who are giving a 19 year old Railway worker support. Life is swings and roundabouts. Move on.

That is just such a great conversation. James wasn't positioning himself in opposition to the caller, he was arguing from a position of compassion. Powerful stuff. Impressive.

I wish Paul all the best in his career at The Daily Mail.

Literally had first hand experience of being shafted by an employer due to having no workers rights but still believes that the Unions should have less powers to protect said rights. Seriously what are people on in this country?.

100% jealous. As an officer work, I too am jealous that we are also not unionized and are stuck with measly 2-5% raises year after year. its insanity that common people are so complacent and agree with what government officials tell them, as they themselves rake in millions from these private companies and are so far removed from their constituents.

It is disappointing that so many people insist on others' life to be as miserable as their own or more so.

"The question is why you don't think you deserve them [the legal protections]". This is really something. There's millions of people up and down this country who have been programmed into thinking they don't deserve better wages, they dont deserve better treatment, better standards of living etc. And when some industry tries to fight for those things, they beat them down. The people of this country are obsessed with self sabotage and self harm. Turning on each other instead of looking to where the money is actually going.

“I haven’t had a pay rise for 8 years”. So what? What’s the relevance? It’s not a race to the bottom. We should all be bringing each other up

Stunning clip. It’s not a race to the bottom. Well done the RMT.

To listen to the guy say he built his life around a career in the Army and say 5 mins later "they threw you out"... that's brutal on a whole new level.

I've never heard someone jump through so many hoops to go from complaining about having been unfairly dismissed, to defending that dismissal just because his original point was completely dismantled in front of him.
