I've just had to rehome my five month old Cockapoo. He's got a loving active new home now but my heart is broken, I love him so much. Young active families only. Never leave them on their own very long, they hate it and will become destructive. Lots and lots and lots of exercise. If you can't fulfill their needs please don't buy one. Believe me an hour up the field and then an hour playing ball at home and he was still hyper! Think very carefully before you get one.

If you like the sound of a Cockapoo, here are the key parts that you should know not covered here:

They are prone to separation anxiety. Unless you know how to raise a puppy there is a good chance your cute cockapoo will develop separation anxiety. Particularly if you are getting one on your own. Separation anxiety is debilitating for the owner, you won't be able to leave them on their own for 20 seconds without them stressing out (crying and distressed). You will not be able to leave them on their own (ever) and it will put you under enormous strain. You will not be able to let other people look after your dog as it will not be fair to them leaving them with a dog that can't be left alone.

Cockapoos are half working dogs. This means they are bred to never want to stop doing their work at a high level of intensity. If they are not able to satisfy their breeds instinct, they will become restless, unhappy and unmanageable. A medium sized cockapoo needs a minimum of an hours walk (running off lead) per day and you can double that for the first three years of their life. They also want a job, a role within the pack that they can carry out. For a first time dog owner I would say a cockapoo is not the best choice. They are smart and need a lot of exercise and stimulation. 20 mins walk a day is not going to touch the sides for an intelligent working breed like this.

You must be able to train your cockapoo. You have to be able to walk it off lead when in parks and fields and around water. They can get to a very high level of excitement when playing and you need to make sure they will listen to you to keep them out of danger. They love water and can't resist diving in for a swim, but you need to be able to have control them off lead to prevent dangerous circumstances.

They are smart and need to be challenged daily. Tracking games and ball chasing are a must, but you have to train them to play these games. If you are not prepared to put the time in on challenging them, training and two hours of off lead walks with your dog per day, you are not meeting this breed's needs and this is the wrong dog for you. Yes they are cute, cuddly, quirky etc but not an easy dog with low level needs.
