Fun Fact: Although the secret service does taste the president's food before he eats it, it's actually not to check if it's poisoned. That's because poison can take a few hours (or more) to kick in, and by that time the president will have already eaten the food.

The real reason one agent eats the food is because if only the president AND that agent becomes sick soon after, then they know right away it was because of that dish that they shared. Quickly knowing the difference between the president getting sick randomly or getting poisoned can spell the difference between life and death.

my mom is an office manager for a Secret Service office, here's some other fun facts!

-ANYTHING the president or vice president does, the Secret Service are probably there. Of course, the president can dismiss them when they want, but if they're not in their house, they're usually surrounded. The Secret Service budget recently had to buy every agent in our state a fancy mountain bike, because the vice president (i think Pence) loved mountain biking, so the agents had to learn to mountain bike and follow him on all the trails.

-the background checks, interviews, and hiring process required to become an agent are even more rigorous and strict than to become an FBI agent

- the Secret Service doesn't just handle protecting presidents, but also vice presidents, all former presidents and their families, and visiting heads of foreign governments. they also are the department responsible for dealing with counterfeit money.
