Atacama: Life in the World’s Driest Desert | FULL DOCUMENTARY

In South America, the Atacama Desert is the most arid desert on the planet: in some places, not a single drop of rain has fallen for 500 years. In these extreme conditions, life is limited to the absolute minimum and is organized around the little water that is available.

However, this hostile desert is very rich in minerals, and still attracts mankind. Mines and large coastal cities have taken over precious water resources. Small communities and fragile ecosystems are the first to be affected by this.

To confront this menace, scientists are actively trying to:
Understand water. Manage this resource. Save the last oases.

From the smallest forms of life to the largest industries, each one now finds themselves… searching for water.

Documentary: Planet Sand EP2: Atacama, the Quest for Water (2016)
Director: Thierry Berrod, Paul-Aurélien Combre, Pierre-François Gaudry, Quincy Russell

We drove from the North of Chile to Santiago, all the way through the Atacama desert. It was a memorable experience and is the most barren and inhospitable desert I've ever seen. Ironically we met a lot of great people in churches at small towns along the way, Iquique, Antafogasta, Arica, Calama, etc.

What interests me about the Atacama is the flowering of the desert, but above all the night sky. An absolute marvel.

It is amazing how in the same time, on the other side of the mountains are some of the most rich forsts and jungles in the world with so much humidity and rain.

Why this channel does not have a minimum of 1M subscribers? Their documental are way beyond good! :)

Still a million times more habitable than Mars. At least it has an atmosphere to breathe and, compared with sending a rocket on a six month trip to another planet with a high risk of failure, is easily accessible. Musk, who wants to go to Mars, would be well advised to set up his colony in the Atacama if he really wants to do something only a madman would attempt, and actually survive.

It’s amazing how much we rely on Water. Without it, there is simply no life.

Im watching this from Minnesota the state of 10 thousand lakes in the US. Wherever you drive theres lakes ponds and marshes. I wonder what someone who lives in that dry area would feel if they visited an area like Minnesota. They year i moved here in rural Minnesota it rained back to back 4 inches in 2 storms and flooded the lake i live by. I felt like i moved into a soggy marsh land. But few years back we had record low rain fall a bad drought. But even in drought conditioning we had much water compared to a desert

The fog catching plants are astonishing--I think the deserts of Namibia have similar botany.

They said they have been without water for around 500 years now and I can't imagine how difficult it must be for baby's skin and care elderly people who have to depend on water 💦 for everything. Sometimes you never realize how blessed you really are. Thank God he's always in control and as long as He's in the driver's seat everything is going to be okay..❤

This desert has become a huge garbage dump for European clothing manufacturers. Unfortunately, this is not shown here at all.
