According to university officials interviewed on 6th December, the source code included the kanji characters for "six four Tiananmen," an apparent reference to the Tiananmen Square Massacre of 4th June 1989.

This phrase is a well-known trigger for China's stringent internet censorship, commonly referred to as the "Great Firewall."

The inclusion of these characters could have prevented users in mainland China from accessing the admissions page for the Computational Biology and Medical Sciences program between August 2023 and September 2024.

Japan used "Tienamen Square!" China became confused. China hurt itself in its confusion!

It's not just Japanese universities. Korean gamers use it to counter Chinese hackers and internet trolls. People send replies to them as if they had been exchanging discussions about "Tiananmen Square" or "democracy in China, " and these internet trolls... suddenly go silent.

I think it's hilarious that people could possibly believe this is anyone's fault but China's. They're the ones restricting harmless words, Tiananmen 6/4 is not discriminatory.

They did not discriminate anyone. China chose to block their admission page from Chinese out of their own choice

Honestly this wouldn't have been an issue If the CCP wasn't so tyrannical.

As a US-born programmer married to a Hong Konger, and who lived in HK 2016-2024, and who attended many of the Tiananmen vigils and 2019 protests, and who saw firsthand how China controls its media and people, and how HK changed in the last few years... It's surreal to hear someone talking about the events of your life like it's just another history class.

I don't really have anything to add, you're just giving me flashbacks. I remember being searched on the border, their ineptitude and hostility. I remember visiting Tiananmen and seeing the predatory smiles of the (supposedly undercover) police. I remember being in a Shanghai hotel that had access to the BBC, and when they started covering the protests the screen went black. I remember how much hatred HK and China have for each other, because HK sees China as an imperialist occupier and China sees HK as ungrateful uppity peasants with silly insolent ideas like "the rule of law."

I'm not sure what the problem is here? Nothing about that actually prevents anyone from doing anything, it is the chinese government which is doing it but japan gets the bad press?

Honestly, given how hostile chinese citizens have been to japanese people recently, I can't blame the guy.

I have never seen the uncropped image of Tank Man. Stopping one armored vehicle is one thing... He stopped a whole freaking battalion, and I never knew.

Genuinely hilarious, good for that dude. If adding words referring to a historic event that happened enough to essentially blacklist mainland China through China's own firewall, guess it just sucks to suck sometimes. You gotta make sacrifices when you're cowering from the idea of your own people realizing how bad they have it.

I don’t see the problem behind the embedded phrases. It’s their country, their choice. I’ve seen plenty of videos of Chinese propagandizing hate against Japan, even laying Japans flag out for citizens to stomp on.

Just want to point one thing out. They weren’t blocking students of a certain ethnicity, they were blocking student of a certain nationality. Specifically from a national that isn’t shy about their antagonism towards Japan and that engages in widespread theft of intellectual property.

Oh no! The CCP experiencing the consequences of its own actions! 😂

"View it as discriminatory."

Ok, so? Why wouldn't you discriminate against the forces of your enemy? Seems like a good idea to me that any citizen of an adversarial nation would need to, at minimum, publicly denounce that nation if they want to enter into and take advantage of the education and resources of another nation.

Make them prove their disloyalty to your enemy if they want your help. Why would you educate, fund, and give resources to loyal members of your political enemies who are going to turn those very things against you?

Lol and this will never be reported on in China because they would have to say the nono word which they can't.

26:17 Whilst you're _technically_ correct, it's odd you chose to frame it like this. It would be more accurate to say that it is, _"students of a specific __-ethnicity-__ _*_NATIONALITY_*_ are blocked from being able to attend a university"._
The use of 'ethnicity' makes it out to be a problem of race. 'Nationality' frames it as a problem of security.

I read a bunch of Chinese webnovels; Every year, on June 4th, most webnovel forums and discussion boards and novel uploads themselves go through uh, "Maintenance". :)

I will never understand why anyone would think any country is obligated to accept anyone from another country for *ANY* reason.
