Cellular Manufacturing: What It Is And Why It Matters

What is cellular manufacturing, and why is it useful? Paul Lindsay, Vice President of Sales at Camcraft, walks us through its importance.

A traditional machine shop has departments. A material comes in and goes to Department A, then it sits around until someone comes around and brings it to Department B.

There's a better way, and that way is cellular manufacturing. You get a single piece flow that eliminates redundant activity, wasted time and the handling of moving things from location to locations.

I came up with thus idea at Walbar in Mississauga Ontario in the early 90s.
Replaced 8 vertical machines with
one Horizontal Mazak. Squaring up blocks using 4 vertical vises mounted back to back.
Frank Stronach from Magna..Boeing ..GM etc came in to see my method.
Salesman Bob Kanerak called me
10 years after I had left Walbar and said " I finally found you.
We just sold our 3000th machine!
That's unheard of in this industry!
You bought the 3rd machine and after everyone saw what you were doing sales increased!!
No thanks from Mazak head office!! Machines were selling for
approximately 1 million a piece back then.
I also bought the first Cad Cam system " CATIA" VP of IBM says I changed the world No thanks for that either!!
