I never understood it, and remembered the first time hearing it, in highschool. None of the other kids could actually give me a description of what the meaning of it was. They just would make some reference to mostly feeling jealous that Steely Dan and etc played with the kind of intense precision they could never imagine themselves doing andvthen would say or want to. According to them "too perfect." The were just jealous kids in school.

My generation just started calling it that. I hate it too because it makes no sense but everyone bases everything of "vibes" whatever tf that even means now.

It helped bring many of them bands back from being forgotten, another run with new generations. These kind of jokes aren't negative, and most of the guys who made them records get it. I've learned that Michael McDonald loves it, great sense of humor. And Donald Fagen may have a sense of humor, but not where Yacht Rock is concerned.
