The simplest explanation for Dolmans, from my personal perspective of need and necessity, is that they are very ancient storm & meteorite shelters, with variances commensurate with the size and number of beings living around them. For me, they offer great advantages such as emergency protection from gale-force, hurricane and tornado winds, heavy rains/hail, lighting, falling debris, etc. Some of the more intricately constructed Dolmans would also be adequate shelters and/or blinds, providing defensive cover and a position from which to fight predatory animals and maybe even adversarial neighbors. Anyways, that's why I might build one if it were feasible for me to do so; stone being the ideal material. Today we build the same type of things with steel reinforced concrete.
