Lesson Description:
Have you ever encountered this chord?: EbMaj7(#5). If you have then you’ve encountered one of the harmonic minor scale chords. If you haven't then you might be interested in knowing how crazy chords like that can even exist in the first place. In short, weirder chords come from weirder scales, which in my opinion includes the harmonic minor scale. In this week's lesson we explore the chords of the harmonic minor scale, and specifically the harmonic minor scale guitar chord shapes that I recommend learning as an introduction to harmonic minor chords.

This lesson on the chords of the harmonic minor scale definitely gets into some potentially confusing theory concepts, but that’s fun right?? :) Regardless, the harmonic minor scale chords presented with the chord shape diagrams that I provide should be simple to play with on your own, even if some of the theory is confusing. I hope you enjoy hearing the weirdness of that augmented chord from these harmonic minor chords (it’s one of my faves) as well as discovering that harmonic minor is one of the sources of the diminished 7 chord.

I hope you enjoyed this lesson and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought. Thanks! :)

I've given guitar lessons over the years, and I can tell this teacher is the real deal.

I really enjoyed this way of building a solid understanding using this nice clean voicing. Thanks man!

For someone like me who has completely pretty much suppressed every emotion because of childhood trauma this video is a complete pathway to freedom of unresolved emotions.

For me this so much more than a guitar lesson.

I found your channel about an hour ago and I'm going through all your videos one by one.

You are an excellent teacher and even though I don't understand most of it....I can clearly tell if I spend the time and absorb the information given I will understand the content.

Thank you so much for all of it🙏

Every time I am approaching a new concept, your videos are always the most concise, and immediately usable toward making music. Thank you so much for your effort, and empathy toward those of us less knowledgeable. It’s like you know exactly what tools we need.

Another great lesson. So enlightening to know where these chords come from and how they are built. And, by the way, the evolution in the style of the videos is very nice. The graphics are much more clear and easy to follow now. And the split screen effect is very helpful as well. Keep up the good work.

Jared, your enthusiasm for sharing your musical knowledge is contagious. I'm listening in my car and I can't wait to get home to my guitar to delve into the new things you are revealing about theory and applying it to the guitar. Thanks so much!

Hey Jared, I don't know how I will ever thank you! You are the best teacher ever. I have been playing the guitar for a while but my theory knowledge has been rusty since I started playing. (7 years now). I must say your series has really opened my eyes to a whole new world on guitar. The theory, which a lot of books makes complicated, you are the true solution! You make the whole process exciting and maaan! I truly don't know how I can pay you back for your channel. Big thanks!

In natural minor I tend to visualize everything on the fretboard in terms of the relative major. In that scheme, where the tonic is written as the vi and the bIII Is written as the I, the harmonic minor seventh chords look like this:

IM7#5
iim7
III7
IVM7
V°7
vimM7
viim7b5

I'm running out of good things to say. Thanks for producing this incredible content! So nice to have this 'missing' piece explained. I have often wondered whether a major 7 existed in a minor context, I didn't realize that Harmonic Minor was the answer.

this info is hard to find on YT. years ago i sat down with pen and paper to construct the chords from the scale myself because I couldn't find it anywhere (especially the 7th chords). good content, thanks!
