Pro tip, you can get those same cool “backwards flying shots” by flying forward and just reversing the video in post.

I have just learned it yesterday, but the quickest way to stop your mini 2 is the return to home button pressed once, really quick. That will stop the drone and hover it in place.

Regarding flying backwards. I was advised instead to fly forwards for the equivalent distance/perspective and then reverse the footage afterwards. Thank you for sharing this advice and fair play to you for being willing to share your 'rookie' mistake. Take care.

This video is really helpful, as a new pilot I was flying my DJI Mavic Mini Pro 3, and I lost site of it, and it wasn't a good feeling, as I panicked and hit RTH, then I finally could see it. Even with the map, I was just freaked out about not seeing it. So great advice and I need to really follow that one. LOL! Thanks for this.

"overshoot" ...I heard it as "over sh#t" 😅

RTH update fun. I was chatting to a guy who did the round the world yacht race. The boats are doing 30/40 knots a cross the Atlantic. The official race videographer had the drone up taking some awesome footage when his controller pings up a return to home warning. The drone disappears over the horizon back to where it was launched 25 minutes (and about 13 miles) away, to land itself somewhere in the ocean.

You definitely don’t want to overshit your target. It gets messy. Check it out at 16:38. Great vid though and thanks!

Great advice. I would like to add that if you need to change your props on the Mini2 then to ensure the screws do not loosen, is to add a tiny drop of loctite/threadlock to each thread.

Great tips Matthew I only wish I had watched before my second flight in Scotland where I lost my brand new DJI mini 2 in the sea due to inexperience, wind speed changing and battery draining down all happening in a few moments!
I never retrieved it 😢

Many thanks for your superb video! I have been flying "toy" drones for a couple of years, upgraded to an MX911, and awaiting delivery of an FPV system. I did take the U.S.A. recreational testing and received my Pilot certification. I have the certificates in all of my drone bags, travel boxes, and also in my car glovebox. (Be aware: if you post/share videos on YouTube, Facebook, etc. you are now a PROFESSIONAL pilot and you need to take the FAA 107(?) exam and be certified, licensed, and your drones need to be marked with your FAA license number).
What folks need to know, at least in the U.S.A., is that F.A.A. regulated airspace is 12" off the ground! I never knew that!
Also, pilots need to have an app on their cell to check for "safe flying/not restricted" air space.
DO NOT fly over people. Do not fly over beaches. ALWAYS have a spotter. Be careful in campgrounds...Do not fly a drone without prop guards amongst people (will save your props anyway!).
Always trim/spin/check controls...calibrate your drone. Don't fly in windy weather unless your machine is robust!
Know the Front and Rear lights on your drone...
Practice, Practice, Practice... learn how to hover (waist level), spin in a corner, move to the right, spin in the corner, and continue behind you.
DON'T SHOW OFF!
You will most likely WRECK 2 or 3 drones before "you get it"....start with inexpensive ones first.
Have a Landing pad. Know how to clean and lubricate your UAV.
Have glues, epoxies, etc. in your repair kit. Extra batteries, External power block for "charging in the field"...SAFE chargers!
So much more! I am excited to be a part of this very rewarding hobby, BUT YOU GOTTA LEARN THE RULES...
Thank you Mattheww Brennan!

Thanks for these tips! I'm just doing preliminary research into possibly buying my first drone and this gives me a lot to think about.

Wop! Saying “loosing a propeller would be catastrophic” depends. My mavic 2 lost a propeller mid flight. And it adjusted itself to only having 3 propellers, as well as notifying me that either it lost a propeller or one of the motors were damaged. It landed safely with 3 propellers.

😂. Your “Return to Home” story is absolute gold. Thanks for the video. Made a lot of great points and gave me a lot to think about as a fairly “green” drone enthusiast.

Great video thanks! An auto update RTH would be a nice feature. I'll be getting the Mini2 this summer so watching a lot of videos.

This was an amazing video full of insight, thank you. Buying a drone for the first time this week. Although I knew about going into a wide open space and spending a good hour learning the drone, other factors like wind speed up high and rth updates was invaluable to me. Thank you for that. It will be a 249 gram drone so will need obvious registration, but need to learn the laws of flying the drone as well. Again thank you.

Appreciate this video. I just had my first flight and I quickly realized flying backwards was bad. Guess I have some binge watching to do. Thanks.
