The Power of Texture - 2 Proven Techniques for Acrylic Landscape Paintings

Using texture can add so much power and magic to your paintings. If you’re not using it you're missing out on some really great ways to level up your work.

In this video I want to show you two of my favorite ways to use it and how I do it in my own work.

One of my most used ways to add texture is Texture using layering.
Underpainting in one color, then thicker paint on top and then scraping back into the thick paint to reveal the color underneath using different tools, such as painting knives, silicone scrapers, rags.

It’s a wonderful way to add some subtle interest to a larger area and depending on your tools you can suggest anything from rock texture, grass etc.

Adding some drawn marks is another favorite of mine. Combining drawing media on top of layers of acrylic paint. I use all sorts of drawing media crayons, dry pastels, charcoal, graphite.

Thank you once again for ideas to liberate landscapes. JMW Turner was well aware of the value of such techniques.

Thank you for sharing your techniques on your large works!

I paint as large, and even bigger, on paper and canvas attached to my studio's walls.

Go big or go home I say because it's massive fun and more profitable.

Cheers.

Very helpful tips and beautiful work. Do you seal the charcoal to preserve the marks for subsequent layers? Thank you.
