Trump again argues for tariffs on foreign goods

Tariffs will hurt American exporters as well. Tariffs will destroy consumers and exporting industries, workers, purchasing power, and freedom of choice. Losers impose tariffs and trade barriers because they cannot compete and innovate.

I retired with 26 years of tariff administration experience in the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (formerly U.S. Customs Service). My job was to review/process the paperwork and collect the duties (tariffs) due on imported goods. When imported goods enter the Customs territory of the United States, duties are paid by the Importer of Record (IOR), which may be a corporation or an individual. NOTHING is paid by any foreign entity (manufacurer, shipper, or nation).

You cannot Tax other country. Other country's citizen does not pay for your own country's tax. Same as you dont pay tax to other country. What tariff is work like this. Importer like Walmart and Costco import goods from other country, and if tariff is placed on foreign goods which is a tax on walmart and costco "AT" the import, then the price will be passed onto U.S. consumer or U.S. citizens. So it make U.S. citizens likely to buy dominstic owned product instead or whichever product is "cheaper" from the import. The U.S. governemnt using term "Tariff" is better than term "Income tax" because if they said they going to increase tariff no one would care even if it increase your price at the store, but if people hear income tax increase then there will be riots. Tariff's biggest winners are corporations, because they can make more money by raising prices since the price of tariff of the import is higher than the domistic goods. Most of Americans does not even know what "tariff" means and they think it is the foreigner government who pays for the stuff, better do research before people wallet gets hit.
