NASA SDO - X2-class Solar Flare, January 27, 2012

Our "bad boy" sunspot 1402 continues to unleash flares. At 18:37 UT this active region produced the largest category of flares; an X-class flare. It measured X2 to be exact.

Since this active region is rotating over the limb of the Sun the eruption was not Earth directed. But energetic protons accelerated by the blast are now surrounding our planet and a S1-class radiation storm is in progress.

S1-class is the lowest of 5 (S1 to S5) and has no biological impact, no satellite operations are impacted but some minor impact on HF radio is experienced.

@nickportugal95 sound is basically caused by particles in the air hitting each other. there is, technically, sound in space because it isn't a perfect vacuum. there would be no sound in a vacuum because there are no particles to hit one another. However, there in practice isn't sound in space because one particle could have to travel 500 miles before hitting another one

@TheWillwillwill yes thats right. lightspeed is for everything impossible because you would need infinitive energie to accelerate some with any mass. photons can only get to light speed because their have no mass and must not accelerate becaus they have at any time lightspeed.

2013 will be like the year of flares, the maximum of what we will be capable of recording will reach a new lvl :) hope we can get some usefull reasearch from that happening...altough its just a prediction ;)

@rfsent5 yet its oftentimes those small tiny things which can change everything.... - actually i think that if the result would have been an error, they would have found it out after repeating the experiment again ( yet the second results only approved the first results) - anyway lets wait for the experiments which will be done in the usa in several years time

your right iheard from that neutrinos too. Because they were traveling with more than light speed they were traveling back in time. thats only possible because they have no mass, too (i think so). but it revolutions modern sience anyway.
