REAL mechanics don't wear gloves? Call me a fake auto mechanic. I think mechanics should consider wearing gloves for a number of reasons. Not just to keep their hands clean. Mechanics can deal with some nasty chemicals. Also people are SUPER gross in their car. I support the wearing of the RIGHT #mechanic gloves for the job!

To make fun of someone who wears gloves is ignorance.

I didn't wear gloves, and now I'm paying for it!! I now have bad skin around my fingers (mostly dominant wrench hand) that always painfully splits open in cooler weather, and doesn't heal completely. Please people, wear em. The stupid prizes for trying to look tough aren't worth it!!

Im a transmission specialist and everyone at my place wears gloves, apart from one guy who now has dermatitis due to the bad oils in automatic transmissions. The new types of oils are thinner than water and can cause all types of health problems. WEAR GLOVES!!

I would say it's the exact opposite. Real mechanics are the ones that do wear gloves. Ya you need to take them off to do the finesse work here and there obviously but it's such an old school uneducated mentality. "got to be the big bad tuff guy that don't wear none of them there wussy gloves".

I trained with a guy that didn’t wear gloves at all and after a month my hands were completely messed up with cuts, bruises, and stains. The worst part is he used his palm as a hammer to knock stuff loose, so did I. That jacked up the nerves and veins in my palm it tingled for weeks after. Now I use a small deadblow hammer to push stuff around. I wear both nitrile and cut resistant gloves depending on what I’m doing. The only time I don’t wear gloves is when I’m working on wiring something together because the torch can melt or burn gloves and good luck getting them off in time. My fingertips can sense something is too hot to touch way before that point.

I started wearing gloves cause I hated cleaning my hands over and over and mainly because my hands started cracking and hurting like you said haha

My father never wore gloves as a tech and fought cancer because of it. He’s cancer free now but his doctors all agreed it was from being in this business. I’ve worn gloves since day one to protect myself from chemicals and booger’s alike lol. People are gross!

I worked for a BMW dealership, I constantly wore gloves. Do you know how expensive the interior is on these I'm not gonna pull the cash out of my pocket to fix it just cause I want to be "manly".

I’ve been wrenching for 30 years. I just started wearing gloves within the past five years, and I wish I had worn them from the start. Now I make sure that my shop is stocked with gloves and encourage my mechanics to wear them. It’s a cheap way to preserve your most important tools.

All these fluids/cleaners/chemicals also happen to be mostly toxic, abrasive, even carcinogenic

Gloves are cheap, and they will save your hands from unnecessary wear and damage from harsh chemicals or sharp objects. Your hands make your living and you only get one pair so you might as well protect them.

When i started out we didn't have gloves. Brakes were made from asbestos and we washed our parts and hands in leaded gasoline. In the winter we went home with a headache from carbon monoxide poisoning almost every day. We were black to our elbows most days. We never thought of the consequences.
My mentor and a good friend that i worked with both died of cancer. (Liver and Lung cancer at between 45 and 50 years of age.
One day for some reason i read the warning on a can of injector cleaner. It said (may destroy red blood cells if in contact with skin). It really got me thinking. I still see co workers washing their hands with brake cleaner!
Wearing gloves drives me crazy and i seldom wear them but when i know when i'm going to be working with a chemical that is BAD stuff i will slip them on. I wash my hands a lot through the day as well. I'm 68 now and i wonder if i'm doomed sometimes.

Circa 1995... When I was a Tech and scrubbed and scrubbed at the end of each day because I was super paranoid to hold my newborn baby son.

Go to any shop, you’ll see real mechanics wearing gloves. I’ve been a tech for 30 years. I used gloves before the were cool. If I could add to you comment about personal safety. Protect your ears. I worked in a tire shop, doing chassis and brakes for 15 years. The relentless sound from tire machines, impact guns and air hammers has done damage to my hearing. Also I like your comment about protecting your self from what lurks inside the cars. I also subscribe to this Philosophy in my current position of a school bus mechanic. We tell the new techs, ” plain on being sick for the first year or so... until your immune system gets up to speed.”
