The way my family owned a gem cutting facility and EVERYONE! was sitting at the eye doctor's office at least once a month to have EXACTLY this stuff removed from their eyes. Kids please don't grind up stones to put the dust on your face, you will go blind.

While mica is widely used in makeup and generally considered safe, there are a lot of issues with just going out and buying mica and doing this. 1) A LOT of mica is unethically mined including the mica used in many popular cosmetic brands. 2) Mica can contain asbestos depending on how and where it was mined. 3) Loose mica can cause issues when inhaled or rubbed into the eyes which is significantly more likely when you're grinding it yourself. 4) Mica that is not milled into a fine enough powder can cause irritation and abrasions on the skin and eyes.

most of the mica that is mined is actually mined by children who get basically nothing just to support their family and the sad fact is that most people dont even know how mica is sourced

I am Native American, live in New Mexico. We have a traditional clay that has mica naturally occurring in the clay. It tempers the clay & is food safe. In the past, many of our potters went blind because the mica accidentally got in their eyes & scratched their corneas leaving them blind. My mother in law warned me to be extra careful with this clay so I didn't end up blind. One example was never dry sand pottery, the dust could end up in your eyes, only wet sand.

As a dancer who regularly wears glitter/ has worn glitter on stage, please DO NOT use mica or any shell based glitter on your face/around your eyes. It can lead to microcuts, eye damage, accidental ingestion, etc. Make sure to read the ingredients of your sparkly cosmetics carefully and avoid all with shell & minerals like mica

I feel like since she offers no information about the danger it might impose, the least she could do is put a simple disclaimer lol

In the Philippines, there's a similar glittery thing called Capiz that we usually use for our traditional windows. It comes from mother of pearl of a certain clam species.

Mica if processed properly is perfectly safe for your eye, and won’t cause any long term effects if it does get in your eye. Many eyeshadows contain mica, but it’s properly ground down into a very fine powdered fibres. However the way she did it was not safe, the fibres should not be that big, pieces that big can cause blindness and cut your eye if they were to get into it. She really should add a warning, and do proper research on these types of things if she’s gonna do it herself.

You guys are saying that it’s not her responsibility to put warnings but did you guys forget that she’s literally an influencer, like yeah ofc people are going to do it if they see it being done-

Mica feels like fiberglass on my skin.😊

Fun fact; most cosmetic mica is gathered by small children who squeeze into tiny dark holes to gather more and who risk their lives for the sake of some sparkle. :|

Here’s a tip for anyone. Use tape to remove glitter around the eye or face. Rubbing glitter will scratch your skin and if it’s near the eye it could scratch your eye. At the end of the day, Glitter is a rock.

The reason the glitter is enlarged for the eyes is because that can be really dangerous.. I've had eye problems before from a tiny grain of dirt on my contact lenses and it was absolutely excruciating pain. Please be very careful.

Just be mindful of buying natural mica, there's a huge problem with child labor in those mines. There ARE sustainable, ethical mica producers out there, but you really gotta do your research on them to make sure you're not supporting child slavery. And I mean it, they've got six year olds dying in those mines, it's really bad. Bad enough that I only use synthetic mica in all my art projects.
