H & S Tedder Issues

Today I wanted to talk about some of the minor issues I have with the H&S Tedder. They aren’t major problems but I think it could be improved in some ways to make it a better machine.

For your pto shaft holder put a hitch pin in up through the bottom and set your pto on it

I am not sure why they put that big hitch pin hole there. It does bounce around some, but the hole on mine hasn't rounded out at all. I never really thought about it not having a jack, since we do a lot of road travel and have to crank it up after every use. Haven't had any flat tires yet either. If yours holds up as well as mine has, you will get a lot a reliable use out of it.

what I do to help reduce the chattering of the draw bar is a piece of uhmw. I drill a hole in the middle the same size as my draw pin and they are about 5 inches round. I just use a whole saw to start then drill the center out. I use these on all my equipment.

I ran a tight fitted pin in my tedder. Broke the top lip of the Tedder tongue running 7mph! Didn't end well when she stabbed into the ground while in operation. I think it needs a little wiggle room to keep from snapping when tractor drawbar works up and down and side to side.

We have a  30 year old Kuhn that is very similar. It still works well. Someone (not me) forgot to put it in working position and turned on the PTO. It bent one of the tine arms pretty good when it hit the tongue. Another time someone else did the same thing, this time it broke the small bevel gear above the star. I usually had to repair it though. Be careful I think yours might do the same thing. I notice that they fixed that problem on the new Kuhn ones by putting a big curve in the tongue.

I look forward to seeing that thing in action the best part of a small Tedder is all your tractors can handle it and your more mobile.

The way i look at it big hitch pin people are probably gonna put a bigger tractor on and tare the thing up. that crank deal just rap a bungee strap on it! other than that seems like a good machine too me. after you run it can you do a overview? im thinking about a tedder in the future id run it with the wd.

I enjoy your videos. Especially when.you review things from a farmer/ mechanic view point. Instead of just blindly recommending stuff just cause it's by a certain manufacturer

Do you watch onelonleyfarmer videos? He always says you can use a big tractor for a little job, but you can't use a little tractor for a big job. That is probably the reason for the large hole in the hitch.

Ya know, after looking at it, I will retract my previous "safety chain" for the adjustment handle. Instead get rid of that "holder", and just attach a chain to the mounting bracket. I'll suppose the handle will probably not move much, and the piece of dog chain will hold it great.

I would also weld a piece of pipe over the hitch pin that matches the attachment hole. Seems simple enough.

Pretty sad with the cost of equipment these days that we have to modify it before we can use it lol. Different story if we buy used, then you almost expect to have to fix/modify it. Looking forward to seeing the tedder used. Have a great day.

3 point hitch pin adapters would be a cheap way to solve your hitch rattle cat3 is 1”1/4 and cat2 is 1” just a thought.

Lord help us, we're in the hands of engineers. LOL That's one of the sayings we've used where I work. You're right tho, those items are minor but, they are things that can be dealt with & improved upon. Stay safe.

What's the difference in price for a top quality rated Tedder from what you paid just for comparison?

I don’t think any Tedder I’ve seen is built very well. I just bought a fella and I’ve been told it’s a notch under a krone but even the krone seems light to me. I know they don’t need to be heavy built for what they do but it would be nice if they made them a little stronger in the hitch area at least. Even touching the hitch when turning would probably demolish the hitch on the best Tedder.

Yeah, I have no idea what they were thinking on that hole for the hitch pin! Lol. Good job saving that $350, that's a bit deal!

I am not being a jackass by saying this but the 3 point mounted version would have being a good option as you would have had a stand and a places to stow the PTO

Check out a pequea rotary rake to see a good idea for a PTO holder cheap price of bent sheet metal works very good.
