What most fail to realize is in a frightening situation, your body goes into an alert state. This causes all senses to heighten, and can lead to illogical conclusions. Since these were skeptics, they did not undergo these effects, leading to no "experience", whereas a believer would have an entirely different experience. As they say, the mind makes it real.
