Just a note on the Benkei story. Most of the details about his life were written a few hundred years after he died in a work called 'Gikeiki' so most likely some of the stories were greatly exaggerated by storytellers by the time they were written down.

Poor Benkie, he grinds and grinds collects all the best weapons on the map and gets owned by the final boss

So you're telling me that Benkei was a giant of a man who wielded a Naginata and died standing upright. . . Bro is ABSOLUTELY the inspiration for Whitebeard in One Piece.

Yi Sun Sin was slandered and disrespected but remained a patriot. The slanderer is bad but the stupid king is worse.

During the Salem Witch Trials, a man named Giles Corey was accused of witchcraft. He was 80 years old when the trials happened, and was an absolute menace. When he refused to make a plead to the court in Salem, he was pressed (put between two boards, the top of which had heavy stones put on it) and repeatedly asked how he pleaded. Giles, every time he was asked until he died, answered with the same phrase.

“More weight.”

Holy shit Yi Sun Shin was so badass. Imagine dying to the sight of the reatreating, burning, sinking, screaming enemy, war drum beating, knowing that you will die but satisfied in knowing your homeland is safe.

I have such a story too. My great-grandfather fought in World War II with the rank of lieutenant. His detachment was assigned to take one of the heights during the breakout of the siege of Leningrad. During the battle, at some point he realized that the orders from the leadership had stopped coming. Retreating to the major's position, he found him killed by a stray bullet. Realizing that his squad had stopped advancing long ago, he personally took command and led the army forward. By this point, the German forces did not expect an offensive, believing that they had already won. Eventually, with numerous losses, my grandfather stood at the top of the height and fell bleeding. He had 6 bullet wounds, but he continued to give orders. Eventually, he lost consciousness. He was taken to the hospital, and there he died three days later
