Just so there is no misunderstanding - getting qualified is not optional. The first jarring realization this aint boot anymore is being told no liberty until you get qualified on the radio. So there is no CC berating you - it's on you - you want liberty like the rest of the crew? Then get qualified as a radio watchstander.

My son joined as a type 2 AST candidate. Finished basic last August and was sent to a base to wait for a prep school for AST school. He has trained as a lifeguard and dispatcher for the base emergency responders. COVID slowed down schools. As he waits he works out with supervision from ASTs. He is enjoying the Coast Guard and patiently training and waiting for AST school. He will likely not go until the end of this year.

Interesting video. As a member of the USCG Auxiliary, I just spent the day doing boat crew qualification practice for a QE later this month (if we don’t get shut down again due to the virus). I noticed a lot of familiar tasks in your qualification sign offs.

I am going straight to ET A school after basic. Is the amount of studying you had to do at your first station similar to the ~7 months of A school studying?

I really love sea animals, is there any position in the Coast Guard that will allow me to work with animals and if so which?

When you are stationed somewhere, do you sleep at a base or can you have your own house and sleep there?

Will I have plenty of civilian career opportunities with good pay when I leave the Coast Guard?

What does it take to qualify for DEPOT? I have no prior experience but I have a bachelors and am a full time high school teacher. Also, do you know any teachers who are in CG reserves? Thank man love the videos.
