What a relief this must have been. The success of the company was in the balance. Now they fly regular missions to the ISS.
To from a guy who read a lot of books and talked to some really smart people, to docking with the ISS in 10 years is pretty amazing.

I have watched as many space developments as I have known about since being a little girl in the sixties when our family would all gather around the TV at home. Watching the live video this mornig was even more special because I have a son who is one of the scientists that has been part of the SpaceX team for several years. Having visited the facility in Hawthorne myself & knowing the work ethic & long hours involved by everyone there makes this a very emotional & exciting day for me!

1) It had no modularity for rapid reconfiguration
2) There was no upgrade path to improve the platform
3) The design schedule was on the scale of years and decades instead of months
4) The shuttle cost 500 million per mission minimum. Once Falcon is reusable look at 1 million per mission.
5) SpaceX is simply a better company in every single metric to the bloated NASA

Yep great day for space and here's one for Neil A and all the guys, future hopes and dreams! Brilliant step forward. For those of us who sat-up all night long ago in 1969 Hope!

That's awesome! I'm very happy for your son, and I can only imagine it must be very emotional to see such a positive outcome. I'm ecstatic myself and have no connection to the company!

Congratulations to you Mr. Elon Musk and to your team! You proved the skeptical critics wrong! I am very happy for you, for what you have done for the United States and for the World in that matter. I really believed in the success of this mission and I am glad that everything is going well so far. It is not over yet but I have no doubt it will end successfully. You are indeed an extraordinary man!

My question would be how much fuel was remaining in the stages on engine shutdown. This would be a key issue on the reusability scenario..

The Falcon Heavy is expected to cost about $100 million..

And it can lift over twice as much as the shuttle...and the shuttle cost us 1 billion.

Also, Goddard had a patent for the liquid rocket, the germans helped, but we definitely would of developed rockets without them.

Just so you know, he actually said "That's one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind".
