Today, with a tiny amount of living material, scientists can extract valuable information about the genetic and physiological function of single cells. In situ biological techniques promise to propel these discoveries even further, retaining specific cell-by-cell information that, previously, was lost to cell dissociation. In this video, Muzlifah Haniffa, PhD, professor at Newcastle University, Great Britain, and faculty member at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, relates how she transformed her interest in astronomy to the workings of the human body. She applies her in situ discoveries to better understanding human development, including her work on creating the first complete atlas of the human embryo, in situ.
