A Brief History Of How The 3000 Year Old Pharaoh Tradition Was Demolished In A Single Month

For 3000 years, Egypt was a titan of the Mediterranean region. Ruled by a King or Queen, using the title of Pharaoh, they enjoyed almost limitless power and wealth.
But by the time Julius Caesar dominated the Roman Republic as dictator, Egypt was a shadow of its former glory.

As Rome stretched its influence over the country, civil war and a vicious power grab erupted. Aided by the Pharaoh Cleopatra, one rival to the Roman throne conspired and claim it all for himself, but in failing, inadvertently brought an end to Egyptian independence, and the end of the Pharaohs forever.

Well the title pharaoh as a metonym for the Egyptian ruler was apparently not used until the 19th dynasty, over two millennia into the history of the state, but in principle yes, they started using it retroactively as well and the forms and type of kingship were evolving in a very consistent way all that time, so the definition largely holds. Imagine if the US lasts a few more centuries and the chief executive is referred to officially as Whitehouse, and retroactively George Washington is called the First Whitehouse of the US.

Most powerful woman in history.
I was surprised seeing Cleopatra's portrait on Egyptian currency notes, but all respect to Egypt for showing high respect and loyalty to their Pharoahs.

The end of Mark Anthony and Cleopatra sounds very much like the idea behind Romeo and Juliet.

The last native Egyptian ruler, Nectanebo, was dead three centuries before Cleo. But, since all subsequent rulers were themselves monarchs, whether Persian or Greek, it was far easier to incorporate Egypt into their larger empires or to impose themselves as a foreign dynasty by taking the Egyptian title and forms. The Romans, still officially a republic, were not inclined to that, and frankly were the first rulers Egypt had no chance of getting rid of. Although Egypt ended up a weird special province under the direct control of the "Emperor", neither Augustus nor his immediate heirs were fool enough to take up the mantle of a foreign god-king when still based in Rome and managing Roman politics in the early "empire". Interestingly, other than the forms of rule at the top, Egyptian society, customs, laws, language and religion continued on a few centuries more, until Christianity found extraordinarily fertile ground among Egyptians, and even then the Egyptian language remained that of the majority for centuries more. A long lived culture indeed.

While the title of Pharaoh continued from the 19th dynasty through to Cleopatra, the lineage of Egyptian rulers did not. Alexander the Great took the title to himself, though he was Greek, and all of the Pharaohs after him were also Greek (itself a Roman word that is applied retroactively to the time of Alexander). Alexander was welcomed by the Egyptians as a liberator from Persian rule, and since Alexander also accepted Egyptian gods, they accepted him as their Pharaoh.

Power, greed, and war. Nothing much has changed.

Egyptian traditions carried into the Roman Era for around four more centuries before the temples were closed and the library

Also conceivably the end of the Roman Republic even though it lived on in name and minor tradition only. And one could speculate wildly the beginning of the downfall of Rome as a political organization considering it only made it through a few generations of rulers before things began to spin wildly out of control.

SO Rome to us is ancient (Though very relevant for our current declining culture). Imagine a Roman first entering an Egyptian temple that was considered ancient to him. AND I did not realize that last part that it all ended in August, one month. TRIPPY.

As an Egyptian, you'd be surprised by how many empires ruled us LMAO. i'm still amused by how managed to keep some of our traditions, cultural food and some phrases from our native language.

Cleopatra was not beautiful. Rather she was intelligent, manipulative and charming.

many many stories and tales were added onto all history books by very many writers, including all the holy books of the abrahamic gods. today we can only make our own rewrites and tell new stories.
