Gerry Buckley, Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek met at London's Central High School where the students were primarily children of military families. The three were sons of American military officials based in London. They were all interested in music and Gerry had already learned to play piano and bass in school bands.

The three worked odd jobs and they decided to form a group called Daze, adding two other students so they could practice between work shifts. All three got their diplomas in 1969 and Dan left the group for a year while he attended college. The two other students left the band and Buckley, Bunnell and Peek rethought their situation and formed an acoustic band.

One of their demos reached concert promoter Jeff Dexter who booked the band to open for Pink Floyd. Choosing "America" as their new name, it held significance since that was their own country, even though they had not been there in years.

After working the clubs and gaining a large audience in the UK, Dexter introduced the band to Ian Samwell who was a producer for Warner Brothers Records and won the bidding war over Atlantic and DJM Records. They set about recording their first LP and were just about done when Gerry brought in "A Horse With No Name" became the last song recorded.

That became their first #1 hit and they had four more Top 10 hits before their next #1 "Sister Golden Hair" in 1975. Continuing to release singles throughout 1975-1976 "Today's the Day" was their last single to chart until they released "You Can Do Magic" in 1982.

Written and produced by hit maker Russ Ballard, the song was a solid comeback for them, peaking at #8 on the Hot100 and becoming the #39 song of 1982.

What a great timeless classic. Brings back memories of the only girl I ever wanted or loved. Too shy to tell her how I felt for four years. Then yes magic happened, she found me 500 miles away with her Letter from an angel. We will celebrate our 53rd wedding anniversary on 08-02-2021. Thank you America for this classic.

1982! 40 years have passed. The magic of 1982 is gone forever but in our dreams for us lucky to have lived it. Different times, different people, different era, different styles, different country, very different simpler times. Glad I lived it. We all still had most if not all of our loved ones still alive and well. Time passages. Never to return.

Their best song for sure. If I had one wish, take me back to those non stressful, carefree days. Blessed to have lived in them. Thanks for all those precious memories.

When this song came out I'd dance and sing to it. It was a popular Top 40 hit and played on the radio constantly. I even sang it at karaoke lol. Thanks for remixing it!

The tracks you select are brilliant! So many underrated songs from so long ago. You breathe new life into them and bring me back to a youth I thought had slipped away.

Digital quality on the mix, as usual.
Class of 1982 in the house!
I played this track about 5 times on my speaker system. Sounds so good.
