One of the first things to do with a new (or used) Cisco router or switch is to get access through the console port on that gear. This video shows you how to make the physical connection from your computer to the console port.

Next video will show what software to use on your computer to communicate with the network device, on its console port.

I think I already know what a console port is, but it's a Keith Barker video, so you know, its still going to be entertaining and informative.

This cable is a must have on everyones toolbox! often discarded by some admins after initial configuration. Save it!!
It’s a few dollars now, but saves the day later time and time again.

Console cables can also be used on other devices as well. We had a NetApp die one time and the other IT folks used my Cisco console cable and USB adapter to get into the NetApp's command line.

I have a query.

How do you setup console connections if you have devices in different networks?

Oh, you also use a console cable to break into switches 😀. Had to do that to several switches that no one knew the password to 😎.

I have a Verizon WiFi router/modem. I would like to replace it with a Cisco WiFi router/modem on which I can also configure port mirroring to monitor all the traffic passing through router WiFi/Ethernet. Keith, which Cisco WiFi router/modem you suggest I should get?

So we can't monitor the switch wirelessly...?

Is the console cable also referred sometimes as a rollover cable?

If the console port on the switch is RJ45, you can connect it to your computer with
a regular network cable and your computer's ethernet port.
