One of the first things to do with a new (or used) Cisco router or switch is to get access through the console port on that gear. This video shows you how to make the physical connection from your computer to the console port.

Console cables can also be used on other devices as well. We had a NetApp die one time and the other IT folks used my Cisco console cable and USB adapter to get into the NetApp's command line.

If the console port on the switch is RJ45, you can connect it to your computer with
a regular network cable and your computer's ethernet port.
