One way to combine DJing and live performance is to bounce a "TV track" - which is a mix with certain parts missing (like the lead vocals or the synth lines you want to perform on the fly)

I know the pain of creating a live setup. I'm doing it with Ableton(+ launchpad + another midi controller) and my modular synth. I'm still not sure about adding a drum machine (maybe TR-8s). It's a long process to set up a project for jamming to play even for one hour without being boring.

Overall I think it comes down to getting as much performance features into as little space as possible (without menu diving). I still think that the OB6 is pretty big for a live setup but the Iridium is perfect in that regard.

Also in live situations many parameters don't make as much sense as in the studio. Effects and Filters are suddenly more important than waveforms and envelopes. I even thought about building a eurorack just for effects and filters. Those are the knobs I will turn live after all.

Love this! I’’m in an electro-rock duo with synced light show, getting very inspired to do projector stuff watching you.
Very smart and creative sollution.

Nice job man. Respect all the work that goes into this. Also I appreciate your honesty and humility. You're a true artist!

Love this. Nice setup and explanation. Thank you. Im working on a live setup in a similar way. A bit less high tech. Drumbrute will control the clock, hopefull, for a hard synth, and three soft synths. Allrouted through a mixer. Still trying to get the pieces to work together. Very challenging. Your video helps.

Good point about that the audience might not know that you're controlling the video effects. Maybe you could have some part in the first track that makes it really obvious. But I don't think it's a big issue, even if people don't get how it works it's still cool.

Good explanation. I use a very similar setup for my shows. The only part I dislike is flying with al the gear.

I am building a live setup that is hardware only. I try to keep things simple yet give myself as many options to explore musically as possible. My main sequencer is an MC707 matched up with a TR-8S for drums. The MC707 provides back up drums, a looper track, three channels dedicated to the onboard synth engine and three channels that sequence and act as a mixer for three desktop synths. Usually I use a TB-03, SH01A and a poly synth like the Peak. The MC707 gives a lot of opportunity for improvising and clip launching, Ableton style.

Some good advice in this episode. Nice to hear the thoughts of someone who has the thing worked out. Cheers! :)

From an artist's perspective and from a consumer's perspective I honestly don't see that much advantages in Ableton style electronic live performance where the artist is just modulating loops to "just" DJing.
However there are also electronic music styles where bands are more common than solo artists (think of styles like Synth-Pop, EBM, Industrial) which works good for me.

Wow! This is some interesting stuff! I hate the handclap artist who pretends be live… But this is a good crossover jon!

So much easier with Maschine mk3, Komplete kontrol keys and controlling Maschine Software and Traktor 3 simultaniously...but still i thank you Jon...youre always inspiring me...you will hear from

Great stuff! Thanks for sharing. And props to Vanessa for being an awesome partner. 2 cents - Do you need people to know you're doing the lights? I think it's cooler to make the music then when people ask about the lights be like 'yeah that was me too'. Smooth.
